Latest news - Book Launch!
As British driver Lewis Hamilton comes ever closer to securing the Formula One World Driver’s Championship, interest in this new book on the very first British driver to win the Championship is growing enormously. This interest includes planned TV coverage during the BBC One Show on 3rd November 2008 (see later). The official publication date is Thursday, 20 November 2008, and we are pleased to confirm that the book will be launched at an event at Swain & Jones, the official Jaguar dealership in Mike Hawthorn's home town of Farnham, Surrey.
This will feature a display of Mike Hawthorn related cars (including Jaguar, Ferrari, Lancia and Riley), along with memorabilia, artwork and photo exhibition. It will be open to the public from 3.30pm to 6.30pm on 20 November at the Swain & Jones premises in East Street, Farnham.
Admission is free, but note that there is no parking on the site; there are public car parks only a few minutes’ walk away. You can find more information on the location with directions and maps plus car park details at:

In the evening there will be a further event organised by the Jaguar
Enthusiasts’ Club which will include an audio/visual presentation about Mike Hawthorn by the book’s authors and others. In addition, there will be a Q&A session with a panel which will include people who knew and worked with Mike Hawthorn. This will provide a truly a unique opportunity for those with a keen interest in Mike to learn more about him from some of his friends and work colleagues. The book will be available for purchase on the night at the special offer price (see below) of £45.00, thus saving postage costs.

About the book
Mike Hawthorn became Britain's first World Champion driver almost exactly 50 years ago, driving for Ferrari. Charismatic and naturally gifted, he was also a member of the Jaguar works team, winning Le Mans and the Sebring 12-Hours with the legendary D-type.
The book was inspired by the Mike Hawthorn Tribute web site

However, the book also includes a vast amount of new material – much from people who knew Mike and who provided first-hand descriptions of the man at work and play. There are also specially-commissioned drawings of Mike’s personal cars, and even aerial photographs of key locations, also specially taken.
Mike Hawthorn - Golden Boy is as much about the man out of the cockpit as in, with extensive and often graphic details of his life at home, at work at the family’s Tourist Trophy garage, and with his friends in Farnham. There are full details of his road cars, including his favourite, the modified 3.4 Jaguar saloon in which, sadly, he was killed on 22 January 1959. Along with much new information on Mike Hawthorn generally, the book also reveals astonishing new evidence by TT Garages employee Brian Taylor relating to his death in this car on the Guildford by-pass on 22 January 1959, when he was just 29
(Brian will be with us in Farnham on 20 November).
The authors are Tony Bailey (who created and manages the Hawthorn web site) and Paul Skilleter, author of previous award-winning motoring books and managing editor of Jaguar World Monthly magazine.

Mailing costs are £7.50 P&P UK, Europe £12.50 air, Rest of World £15.00 air. Local despatch is available for the USA at £9, Canada £10, Australia £9, and New Zealand £10.
Also available is a numbered and signed leather bound limited edition of 150, in slip-case with especially commissioned Tourist Trophy Garage enamel badge, price £150 with same P&P.

Memorial Service
There is to be a public Memorial Service for Mike to be held at 1:30pm on Sunday, 25th January 2009 at St Andrews Church in Farnham. We anticipate that this will be a major event and will be followed by a procession of cars related to Mike through Farnham to West Street Cemetery to his burial place where the grave will be blessed.
You will be able to find more details of this on the Tribute web site via the home page which carries the latest news summaries.

The BBC One Show
Providing nothing changes at the BBC, the One Show will carry a short (4 minute or so) item on Mike, the day after the final F1 Race of the season - Monday 3rd November at 7.00pm. Some of us have been involved with the camera team for a day at various locations together with the legendary Murray Walker who should front it. Final editing won't take place until the 3rd November as what happens the previous day in F1 has a bearing on the content!!
It will be available via the BBC iPlayer afterwards (at least in the UK) should you miss it. There are a number of photos taken during recording session on the tribute web site at:
