Let's hope they all turn up safe and well.

Saw the news last night reporting the severe weather problems for this run..... but had no idea there were 1700 missing!

Shocking.

Fingers crossed.

Typical sensationalist reporting. They will all be scattered about the area, but I wouldn't describe them as 'missing'. The temperature around the Lakes wasn't that great yesterday and it didn't stop raining all day, I wouldn't have wanted to be on the fell in those conditions unless I knew I could keep dry.

As far as I'm aware all the runners are experienced so there shouldn't be too many who got into difficulties.

A colleague at work does this sort of thing - bonkers.

They have to go out in pairs for safety reasons as people fall over and have injuries or get lost.

It the length of marathons but across country and through bogs, etc.

He seems to enjoy it the more miserable and hard it is. confused

I think the official line is "unaccounted for". A lot of them won't have realised the race has been cancelled. Hope they are all OK.

We were up Honister Pass last weekend - the wind was so strong you could hardly stand up! Quite scary actually and took us off-guard. Of course, we were in cars so perfectly safe - can't imagine it much worse for these guys!

Not my idea of a good Saturday night.

I'm sure they will all be fine.

quite ridiculous that the race promoters allowed it to go ahead. Secondly that the individual runners themselves still decided to go - surely as part of their experience they take note of weather forecasts etc and take an informed judgement on whetehr to proceed? I hope they all get back OK though.

I trust the organisers will have to pay for the police and rescue response rather than the tax payers.

Don\'t be so ridiculous. As a taxpayer, I\'m more than happy (in fact I insist) to pay for emergency servioes to recover them. People getting off their arses and doing something and you think they should pay? Absolute idiot.

Reading the Beeb news page yesterday, the organiser were strongly advised to cancel but still went ahead. Foolish, or determined?

Irrelevant. If I were local I\'d happily volunteer to help out.

Calm down young man it is Sunday morning and we have all had an extra hour. so chill. (PS I assume you are young to account for your 'rose tinted spectacle' naivety)

I don\'t know what you mean about naivety I\'m afraid. Cannot see how that\'s relevant to the above comments.

As to age - I wish I was still young.

Hope that all are recovered safely.

The OMM does have the reputation as being one of the toughest Mountain Marathons. I did it last year and found it tougher than the other events I've done (LAMM and Mourne MM), a big factor in that was the weather!

All those competing should be experienced in the outdoors and have a good level of fitness. The rules ensure that the competitors have enough kit to survive in conditions such as these.

Also, it is very much the decision of those taking part to go on the hill!

The people taking part are almost entirely experienced in being on the fells and are more than capable of deciding for themselves if they want to take part. The ethos of the event is that is a challenge, including the potential for harsh weather.

As for the rescuers- I know a few people on local mountain rescue teams and they will be thrilled to be on a shout- that's why they join up in the first place.

And what about the assistance that doesn't come free?
Volunteering to "help out" is one thing, coordinating and executing a major serach and resuce operation requires something a little more. Not suggesting people would actually want paying for their efforts, but vehicles don't run on fresh air, SAR aircraft cost money etc....

SAR is RAF or Navy - so paid via our taxes and that is a service they provide - and probably quite happy to do so for the practice.

Why must we be expected to pay for everything twice? Apart from Football where there is massive crowd control issues, surely, there must be some goodwill left in this country?

Nobody forced them to run, from what I understand everyone carried a lightweight tent and emergency rations, so unless anyone has slipped off the edge of a ledge etc, they all should be OK.....

Too much nanny state going on, these are grown experienced adults,.. this was not a school trip, (which would be an entirely different matter)......

(all imho)
