i noticed the other day that my horn is not working. There is a noticeable click when pressing it as if it is trying to work, but no hoot unfortunately. Checked relevant fuses and they are fine.

Now, although i cannot be sure, i think the horn stopped working after taking the Z4 to a BMW dealership to have a new electric windown motor and sensor fitted to the drivers door. Could fitting new electric window gubbins have inadvertentaly affected the horn electrics? Would it be worth taking it back to the garage saying this?

Either way, any ideas what might be lacking in my horn department? I was thinking perhaps something i could quickly fix myself?

Thanks

Greg

I bet it's a wire off or something, pretty simple, if you know where to look. I'm sure the stealer would take a quick look for you.

When it is working, it sounds like a clowns nose!

Was looking for the horn mechanism the other day to check fro loose wire etc, but could not find it (although it was quite dark). Anyone know where it is?

Dear All,

just wanted to update you on this, as i am positively fuming.

After some basic diagnostics of my own (fuses etc) i took the Z4 to a BMW dealer to have the horn fault inspected, with the hope they could fix it there and then.

After half an hour or so, i was informed that both (yes both!) horns were kaput and that i needed x2 new ones, at a cost of just under £200 with labour, not including the £40 diagnostic charge for today. I asked how x2 horns could just go, and they said that it is not uncommon :eh: . After some mumblings from my good self about how i wanted the old units once changed so i could 'see' for myself what had simultaneously gone wrong with both of them, i begrudgingly booked it in to get fixed later in the week.

So, off i drove, wondering why i ever got into BMW ownership if such basic things as horns break regularly (and in unison), especially after the heartache and pain of 4 years of TVR ownership (just for the record, the horn on my Cerbera never missed a beat smile ). Half way home, i though 'lets try the horn just for the hell of it' and imagine my suprise when it worked perfectly. I tried it again and again, gave it 10 mins then tried it once again, and a proper peep every time smile. It sounds fixed to me, but then what do i know?

Needless to say, i have cancelled my booking for later this week, and am in two minds whether to complain to the dealer.

Still, at least they fixed the horn for £40 - now thats not bad service in itself smile
