Annoying e46 electrical/buttons problem!

On my 330ci the button strip for the DSC, heated seats, etc doesn't light up and none of the buttons work. There seems to be only one connector to the back of the unit and this is connected ok.
Has anyone else had this issue? I'm beginning to think that the panel itself may be faulty.
