Probably beneath quite a few of you, judging by some of the threads here, but I'll try...

I find myself wanting/needing a digital camera better than that in my phone (for photos of the newborn for the relatives, etc.). I'm guessing I need
. PC connectivity (USB, I presume)
. Easy to use
. Decent enough resolution to print out in 'normal' sizes if they want to

Anyone care to point me at an F.A.Q., give advice on what specs to look for, or just plain recommend one?

From what I've read I think the Panasonic Lumix is going to be a good bet.

Have a look at http://www.jessops.com/Store/s73861/0/Digital-Comp...

I'm looking at one to keep in the glovebox or take out when the SLR's a bit too full on

Thanks Andy

It looks like it'll fit the bill. The only other one I've really heard of is the Ixus range; the OH has a film one and even I can use it. Sadly, I've lived on disposables thus far, but now the develop, scan cycle is frustratingly slow.

Anyone else care to help out a luddite? A quick "For God's sake don't buy <x>!" would do...

In case anyone stumbles on this, too late! I read as many reviews as I felt I had time for, nearly bought the Panasonic in Curry's ('til the yoofs annoyed me playing with the alarm system). So I went to Jessop's and bought the Digital Ixus 85 IS, which the reviews (and the salesman) seem to rate highly.

Got an email from dabs earlier today with this on offer. What sort of price did you pay?

£179.99 (same price in both, if memory serves). And a 4Gb SD card for £20. Nice guy, too - he tried talking me into the cheaper 860, but I'd read the reviews on the 85 and there was only a tenner in it.

I've taken my first photo and everything! I feel (rather pathetically) proud. hehe
