I am re-engining my Spartan. Taking out the old 2 litre Pinto - it is getting long in the tooth, has multiple oil leaks, and still pulls like a train.
To replace it I have an ex-Sierra Saphire carb version DOHC. Now I want to fit this to my Type 9 box. Has anyone done this and if so can they tell me if I have to modify the gearbox.

all ford engins fit all ford boxes just have to change clutch/cover/ release brg & on some fwd engines fit a spigot brg or change flywheel

A close friend of mine did this conversion on an injection DOHC, the flywheel was extremely thick, and he had it machined down for the conversion

Migwell someone already said to me I needed spacers between the bellhousing and engine to make this work - same effect as machining the flywheel. They "thought the spacers should be about 10mm". Someone else suggested using the gearbox bellhousing from a 1.8 TD Sierra. I am hoping someone here can give a definitive answer.

No they don't! The Type 9 will bolt up to the DOHC engine, but there are numerous combinations of Ford engines and boxes that won't fit e.g. The Duratec V6, the Duratec HE and the Zetec SE will not bolt up to any of the RWD ford boxes.

This may not be a definitive answer, however I can confirm that the 1.8TD bellhousing is the same pattern as the Xflow / Pinto / Zetec, but is approx 20mm longer to allow for the huge flywheel used on the Diesels & DOHC engines. It's also worth noting that the input shaft on the 1.8TD gearbox is approx 20mm longer than a standard 4cyl petrol box so it will reach the spigot bearing (I think it's the same as the V6 box I/P shaft but don't quote me on that)

I suspect that you would have to use a Diesel starter motor as well as this part of the bellhousing is a different shape to the "normal" one.

If you need any measurements / pictures I have a "standard" T9 box and a 1.8TD one behind my garden shed eek

Thank you B@man smile That is the type of info I needed. Now I know I have to source a TD Box and starter motor.

I assume your diesel box is for a project wink PM me if it is for sale.

Hi KJ,

Yep the TD box is for my 1.8TD inter-cooled Rickman rolleyes which will use a collection of bits nicked from P100's, mondeo & an RST.... If I ever get it finished.

I've seen a few TD boxes come up on ebay, there doesn't seem to be anything at the moment.

Can you change the Flywheel ? - When I first put the TD engine in the ranger I bolted it to a standard T9 box while I made up the engine mounts, as the first engine I bought was a bit of a bitza and had a FWD flywheel which is more like the pinto one. It was only when I bought a complete TD sierra that I got the correct bellhousing, box and flywheel and then I had to move the box back by 20mm as the engine would not move forward due to the front x-member.

Given the position of the engine cradle in the spartan I don't think this will be too much of a problem as there should be enough room to move the engine forward a bit to save you having to shorten the prop !

My dad put a 1800 Zetec in his spartan - With EFi - It's a much better car now !

I have asked my friend to comment on your question as he's done it, im sure as you said he had 10mm taken of the flywheel, he used normal clutch and he didnt change the bell housing, it went straight on

i am the one who has done this conversion u need to take about 8 mm off the flywheel it also lightens it so engine revs more freely if u put spacers between bell housing no sure whether u would have enough of the shaft goin into spigot bearing may wear out quicker but you can use dohc clutch mines been done 18 mths no probs hope his helps

Hi Banbury,

smileyes I knew there was someone out there who had done the job.

Do you mean I need 8mm skimmed from the face (clutch side) or the back (engine side) of the flywheel.

Did you have to get the flywheel rebalanced.

Did you use the DOHC starter motor or the Pinto starter?

Are there any other problems I should be aware of?

Hi from Australia
Don't know if you guy will know, but I've been looking to bolt a T5 or it's predecessor the Borg Warner T5 to a 3.0L Duratec engine... Have heard rumors this can be easily done and that people have done it in the UK. Any thoughts and help appreciated.

Duratec is a Mazda engine I believe. There is bellhousings for 2 ltr Duratecs to ford boxes, so you'll have to find out if they fit the V6 engine.Raceline is a company doing the housings.
