It's a shame Australians can't invest such enthusiasm into brewing a beer which doesn't taste like watered-down horse piss. IT's all, and I mean ALL, utter utter filth.
What utter rubbish. Some of the best beer I've ever had is Australian; particulalry like: Coopers, Little Creatures, Hahn, Boag's & VB.

Cooperstry it
available at most good beer sellers in the UK
A sublime beer.
Agree - most of our standard, high volume beer (ie fosters, swan lager, tooheys etc etc ) is rubbish

I've been down under three times, including earlier this year. It's a great place with many fine features such as the wine and - ignorring the propensity to cover food in beetroot - the food. But one of the main things I most dread about the trip is having to drink the fizzy filth they call beer. Even some of the smaller brewer's stuff, as mentioned above, is way way too gassy, so we take the precaution of carrying a small drinking straw with which to stir the pint (and that's another bugbear, midis, schoons etc; good god, just sell me a bloody pint ferchrissakes!) to knock the excess gas out of it. Australians - or bar staff as i prefer to call them - are generally clueless as to what constitutes good beer; something that actually tastes of malt and hops is always a good starting point IMO.
They should get some Germans in to teach them about how to make good lager. Now I love my skiing trips to Austria where one of the highlights is the fine selection of lagers...

The UK is hardly on solid ground when it comes to beer though, 95% of the people drinking in pubs are drinking crap. Carling, Stella, 1664, Fosters, Heineken etc (all brewed in the UK I might add) and most of it down to marketing. (probably). Most Aussie beers are nicer and more refreshing than these.

. Guess it's a bit like me liking some of the more "expensive" european brands but also liking Becks

Thus proving you know nothing about beer...As for British ale -

The point about the UK is that you can find some fantastic beers if you look. Doing that's pretty much impossible in Oz.
Oh and lager does not represent 95% of the pub-sold beer in the UK either, though I do take your point about Festers and Heini etc being crap.

Plenty of small breweries around, several in Fremantlte for instance, Little Creatures, Mad Monk, etc that have really great beers.
