Autosport said:

Ford rally team boss Malcolm Wilson says he cannot guarantee the manufacturer's participation in the World Rally Championship next season.

The 2004 campaign will feature 16 rallies, with Mexico and Japan being added to the 14 events in this year's calendar. And Wilson says uncertainty over WRC regulations means that it is very difficult for teams to put together budgets for next season.

"Much as I would like to, I can't guarantee Ford will be here next year," said Wilson at the pre-event FIA press conference. "Anyone who is in charge of a company like Ford at the moment would be worried about the situation.

"The problem is that the situation for next year keeps on changing, so it is impossible to put together a budget," he continued. "We have always been opposed to the idea of 16 rallies."

Hyundai has already confirmed that it is taking a break from the WRC from next season, but Mitsubishi is returning after its year-long sabbatical.

More doubts due to the FIA's shenanigans.

But maybe Team McRae could be the factory backed Ford team.

I heard about this on the itv-f1 site, apparently they are going to concentrate on their F1 more (must be through the cosworth engines and Jaguar)... Shame really, the new Focus appeared to be a blast of a car.

Still, the WRC is destroyed this next year.

But why would they pay someone like Marko Martin to be on their books for 2004 if they were going to give the McRae brothers the money to run a privateer team? Doesn't make sense.

Ford will be there, unless the size of the Jaguar F1 budget spirals ever further out of control and they have to bail out another crap season again...

The FIA's prime "raison d'etre" is to ensure that no series challenges F1 at the top of world motor sport. Over the last ten years they have managed to destroy evey world series that looked like it might make an inroad into F1's dominance. This is just the latest demolition job in a long line of demolition jobs.

Well done the FIA.

the FIA certainly has lost a lot of respect from the motorsport world. It's quite strange, I've followed the WRC and F1 for several years but never known the name Max Mosely before... This year he has screwed so much up I can't stand to hear it!

Interesting point.

Sales of RS road cars is influenced by WRC success (and the RS badge heritage of course) just like Scooby's and Evo's so I'd reckon Ford will be there if posible.

If there was to be a team McRae I'd reckon they'd be running 2002/03 cars as the main teams would not sell the latest hardware to a private compeditor.

Fancy not knowing who Max Moseley is. Max was one of the founders of the March Formula 1 team back in 1969 and is the son of former British Fascist Party founder and leader, the late Sir Oswald Moseley. Max was also a handy F2 racers in the 60s and is a qualified barrister by profession.
