Just got an e-mail from my friend, who works with the military on projects (consultancy type stuff). It read:
I'm now depressed too.
And too old and fat to become a fighter pilot.

I got chatting a guy in my local years ago. Turns out that we were both pilots. I mentioned that I'd gotten my PPL a couple of years previous. He asked what I flew. I mentioned 3 or 4 single-engined 4-6 seaters. I asked him the same. Tornadoes. Oh.

Jealousy is never good.
Its very easy to think that life's greener on the other side, lets face it, most fighter pilots think that its better working int he city shouting buy buy sell sell and getting multi million pound bonuses rather than sat in a cramped cockpit for eight hours a day waiting to be sent up and only getting to fly one day in ten.

How much fun do you think I have sat in the office on a sunny day in the summer, crunching numbers, doing my project managementy bidding whilst said fighter jets are being test flown on site?! (actually, theres a selection, Hawks & Typhoons)depressed management consultant said:

You walk back to your car at the end of the day pondering whether there really was any point to the last 8 hrs of your life whilst Maveric and Goose saunter past in the opposite direction grinning from ear to ear.

[and yes, theyre all roughly the same age as me too (mid twenties)]

Yeah. I bet he looked at the management consultant sat opposite him and thought "you know, I really wish I had that guy's life. It seems so...exciting!"Only downside I can see in Maverick's career is that no woman would ever believe you in a bar when you told them what you did. Ever.
