What to charge - calendar
Discussion
Out of the blue, an automotive manufacturer has asked to use one of my photos in a calendar run of about 500 They will have gotten a copy of my image through a race team I'm presuming. They have sent through a mockup of the calendar page showing all 12 months on the one page, with my photo as the background.
They've already edited the photo, by converting to black and white, and extending the rear of the image to give slightly more area behind the back end of the car....so have already done all the editing work, before asking if they can buy the photo from me. So having done the work, they write and enquire as to whether the image is for sale. All the work has been done by them, so nothing further required from me, which is great news.
Here's a copy of my original.

Any thoughts on an appropriate fee?

Steve had a similar question last week - that thread has some potentially useful links in.
My only suggestion would be: charge as much as you feel comfortable with, on the understanding that you won't be disappointed if they say "no" nor will you feel short changed if they take you up on your offer.

wouldnt have a clue about fees but depends on what you want.
be fair with them and you may get more biz from it.
id ask them to name a price to use it in that one calendar and just take their first offer on the basis "they will consider other photos of yours in the future"
if they want complete rights to it and all that i'm certain someone more knowledgeable will be along soon

The fact that they're already mocked up the image into their design would immediately tell you that they WANT your image and as such you should be able to ask for above average level payment - BUT - it all depends on whether you think the manufacturer may have use for you in the future, in which case giving them a decent, average price will give them more reason to approach you again in the future...
I've recently had a price list from a calendar publisher (note that they set the prices, not the tog...)
They say how sorry they are that times are hard and that they are having to cut rates... for an A4 calendar (per image) they offer £48, down from £65. Cover premium is 50%.
So if you want to make a living (let's say £20K pa gross) selling photos for calendars, you'll need to sell 417 images a year.

Not wanting/trying to be antagonistic, but that does not seem a bad deal to me.If you are doing it for a living, you have a lot of time free to take the said 417 pics and process them.Admittedly, its a lot of different calenders....
And one assumes thats not your income stream ?

It's just making the point that you won't make a living out of it. I doubt that even full time you'd take and sell 417 photos a year. Of course, if you publish calendars, you can fill your boots for tuppence - it's very much a buyer's market.I spent a chunk of my time on this market and won't waste any more - speculative work is a fool's paradise. But I agree that if you have a day job, then an extra £45 for beer is a good fillip.

This would seem fair in this case, in a run of only 500 copies assuming roughly £10 per calender. 12 images to pay for, printing, retail etc. They say how sorry they are that times are hard and that they are having to cut rates... for an A4 calendar (per image) they offer £48, down from £65. Charged £125. They said "no problem". Just need to send them a high res version. Thanks for the advice folks. I do wonder how much they were budgeting for though

So long as you are happy with the amount then their budget doesn't matter.
Absolutely Jeremy. More than happy with that fee for one picture taken 18 months ago and sitting on my website doing nothing. The company is Roush Technologies, currently rebranding. They will send me a few A2 sized calendars too.
Incentivises me to start putting up this year's photos.....they are so much better.
