I know I know filling in my tax return far too late, but I do have a question.

During the last tax year I rented out a property, my tenants left and I put the property on the market. Can I claim expenses for the property (ie mortage interest, service charge, agent fees etc) for the whole year or only when there were tenants in it. The whole time it was on the market it was empty.

Thanks

You say put the property on the market, do you mean you were looking for new tenants or trying to sell it?

It was on the market to be sold after the tenants had left (done a runner actually!!).

In that case i reckon that strictly speaking they are not allowable expenses. Cease to be allowable deductions when you decided not to look for new tenants and to sell.

Probably not want you wanted to hear, sorry!

You have plenty of time to submit your return if you chose to submit it on-line. The filing date for on-line returns is still 31 January.
