Heater controls flickering

Hi guys and gals,

I've had a look at an e36 that I now want to buy but the heater controls flicker when they are used. By this I mean when pressing the buttons to change the temperature. The amber display flickers and sometimes turns off all together. Sometimes it changes the temperature display but still flickers. The above happens only when using the controls, not when left alone.

I've done a search but found nothing. Any ideas what could be the problem?
