The buyers guide here is all the info you'll ever need.
V6 are more reliable than the twin sparks (more robust rear suspension, less sensitive with regards to cambelt change), but they are still a group 20 car. Mpg will be low 20s. The bonnets are very prone to stone chipping and the electrics need to be thoroughly checked - electric aerial, windows, AC, mirrors, etc.
Buy post 98 and get the better interior with plastic alloy dash, better airvents - it's a nicer place to sit.

I found Jamie's guide good. http://www.alfaworkshop.co.uk/alfa_romeo_gtv.shtml Watch out for the oil cooler connections.
They are very nice cars to own, although quite thirsty. I probably get low 20's mpg, but that's because I like the loud pedal quite a lot!
I would get the phase 2 one as was mentioned on here before, it has a gorgeous interior plus a few extra body coloured bits and nicer wheels.
Also you won't need a stereo ever, and find out where the tunnels are near where you live / on your way to work!
Insurance is expensive, but what a car!!!

Bushes, ball joints, cam-belt, oil-cooler(&pipes), clutch and the airbag light all appeared to be the cliched potential maladies when I was looking around for one -and the first thing I had to replace was the Radiator (which I understand is quite common also). Well worth the hassle though
