Hey all,

Now we have long nights upon us, after a night ride in the hills tonight in low single figure temperatures and with heavy sleet thrown in for good measure, I realised I need new winter gloves.
I have some old Gore windstopper gloves(thin but good), must be 2002/2003 vintage that are too ripped up to shreds to take me through winter. I tried to get another pair last winter, but found after many years of making them, that was the year stopped. Bugger.
So, I need some new gloves:
+10 -5C range
Windproof (so sort of rain proof)
Not bulky - I want to feel my bars and controls!
Price is not an issue if they are quality and last (for a few years).

Any suggestions?

Ski gloves. Seriously, I have some Salomon gloves, had them for 10 years. Utterly brilliant, you could dip your hand in liquid nitrogen and you'd still be warm.

How bulky are they?

You'll have similar dexterity to if you amputated your arms at the shoulders!

I've heard good things about these, not tried them myself though:

Assos do some great winter gloves (as you'd expect Assos to)

My trusty old Gore windproof gloves aren't windproof any more. They're not ripped as such but my fingers froze the last couple of days.

Therefore I have dug out the Sealskin gloves again. Don't like them much because they're too bulky (like ski gloves) but at least my fingers were toasty this morning.

I tried Seal Skin gloves years ago, but they just felt like I had plastic bags on my hands.

I have their socks that I used to use in the depth of winter, which worked, although I found they are not warm unless you have the inner sock. But they still felt like I had plastic bags on my feet... A few years ago I got winter boots (NW ones - look naf, but mine are usually covered in mud so hey ho!), and have had toasty and dry feet since - well until you put your foot down in an icy deep puddle (which I avoid for that very reason!)

I got some endura double layer gloves They are not too big but are very warm and dry. They worked a treat last night when i went for a few hour walk with the dogs.

Not so bulky you can't operate the brakes or gears on your bike. Go to an outdoor shop and try some - they're like mini-ovens.

Go to wiggle, they have a fair few sets of winter gloves that look pretty good (some have reviews from MBUK etc) - there seem to be some good seal skin / altura offerings.

I recently tried all the bike gloves I could find. All had various issues, like really uncomfortable stitching ridges inside every finger. Plus of course the horrid graphics they love to put all over them is uber tacky. I also noticed the grip on offer is pretty poor. How hard can it be to make a glove?!

I gave up and now use my old favorite hugo boss fitted leather gloves for riding too. Ultra comfy they are too

For really cold wet weather you can't beat Gore-Tex gloves, they are dearer but for any longer rides in the cold they are worth it.

I use a pair of Seal skinz liners inside a pair of normal riding gloves (bought one size too large).

After speaking to a mate who runs a store, with the remit of "bring whatever glove you recommend that is in your store to the pub for a pint". I have ended up with these, Gore Alp-X.

So far so good, and the price was right (cost) smile

I've got some of those Endura Dexter's, had them all over last winter and they're sill going strong ready for this winter. Very good, warm but not too hot, decent padding and they're thin enough material to not get in the way on the bike.

I'd recommend them.
