Hi,

I think my front propshaft UJ is failing (94 500, T5 box). I have an intermittent clattering coming from the area around the back of the gearbox, exhaust silencer area. It is only present when drive is engaged and increases with speed,(its not the exhaust knocking - I dropped the exhaust and ran on axle stands in drive). Can some one tell me the UJ size or the donar vehicle this UJ comes from, I can't seem to locate it on any of the TVR spares suppliers.

Thanks

There's a secondhand prop shaft going on ebay.

Mark, if you are ok to have it off the road for a couple of days can you not take the propshaft to a repairer in Adelaide - Took my S prop to a local repairer cost £48 so saved me a substantial amount over breakers and TVR parts suppliers

eta that was for a new u/j fitted

With the exhaust dropped you should have enough access to the prop shaft to feel for play in the UJs.

Have you by any chance recently repositioned or replaced the exhaust ? the rear of the exhaust box has a “dent” in it which puzzled me until I fitted a newly made box without a “dent” and found the UJ clattered against it. Took the box off and whacked a dent in it with a lump of wood and all is now quiet.

Hi,
I thought originally it was the exhaust and propshaft knocking, I dropped the exhaust but left it connected at the manifold and ran the car with the back on axle stands - definately not the exhaust knocking as it was well below the chassis. Clatter is iether the UJ or something in the gearbox or above it. As I'm in Australia its easier to buy spares myself or quote a doner vehicle instead, mention TVR to most motor factors or garages they look at you with a blank expression. The plan will be to drop the propshaft and get UJs overhauled. I guess if I run the car in gear without the propshaft connected it will confirm or not the UJ as the problem.

you will lose a lot of the gearbox oil out of tail housing if you simply withdraw the propshaft (splined fit into box through rubber seal)a bit more if you run it through the gears.

If you're looking for a mechanical knock from the propshaft then check the clearance between the UJ and the gearbox tail housing. Where the housing is fitted with isolation bushes, these can fail and allow the housing the drop onto the UJ.
