The eagerly anticipated Audi TT RS will have a new 2.5 litre five cylinder supercharged and turbocharged TFSI engine (phew) making 335bhp, according to factory ‘spec’ documents leaked from the German dealer network.

Running a six-speed transmission, the new 450Nm TFSI powerplant will be good for a 0-62mph sprint of 4.5 seconds – yet also capable of returning 28mpg while touring. In fact, Audi believes the TT RS will be one of the most efficient sports cars in production when it finally hits the street in late 2009.

According to the dealer specs, the TT RS will be distinguished by large front air intakes, 18ins aluminium wheels and twin oval tailpipes. The cabin will get the familiar ‘RS treatment’ with special badging and special sports seats.

Both coupe and cabrio models are going to be released together, although no official price details have been revealed. But somewhere in the region of £45k - £50k seems reasonable.

Doesn't seem so much more than the TTS, which itself doesn't seem that much more than the 3.2. Course, if it were hotter it would be too close to the R8...

Buy the original 225 bhp model, stick an IHI turbo on, have it setup with a Merc sprinter intercooler and there is 360 bhp for under £12k!

Obviously it isn't going to rival MX5 or Elise economy, but for its class it should be competitive.

Twin-charged 5 pot sounds very, very interesting

I like, I like. Saw a TTS in the car park at work last night, it was silver with the RS4 alloys. Looked nice, hopefully the TTRS will be more of the same, just wish I had £50k.

there's a N/A 2.5 using in the American market Rabbit (Golf)

don't know haw many cylinders it has though...... V5 maybe

yes, that engine can be tuned to ridiculous amounts of power and torque !

look at the current 2.0 TSFi and the old 1.8 20v Turbo.

I was mildly tempted when the rumours first came out, being the owner of an "early" Mk2 TT. However, for that kind of price, we're looking at Porsche territory - year-old 911s, Caymans...or, the rumoured McLaren £60k sports car in the pipeline. I'm now not sure I want to spend £50k on what essentially is still a front-wheel-drive car with Haldex quattro...

The TT is a pretty car (I would say that), but it's also a car of compromises - it's relatively cheap, great fun to drive, doesn't drink like a fish and really easy to live with. Am I going to get blown away by a super-hot version of that, or is it just (a bucket load) more of the same?

I'm firmly in the wait-and-see column...

By the sounds of things Audi are tuning it up quite well as it is, but the Cayman can also be supercharged and given far more power than the Audi has potential to deliver. The RS4 I 'get', in fact, I almost bought one 18 months ago, but this has far too much competition to deal with IMO.

I'm currently running a mk2 3.2 Coupe as my weekend car alongside my Polo TDi and GSXR600 sportsbike. The Audi is no match for my old Elise or M3 in the driving department or as involving but it's well finished, nice interior, comfy and handles fine - much better compared to the mk1.

Have to say initially the RS is quite an interesting proposition but as others have mentioned the Haldex Quattro is not an ideal setup and for £45k+ there's a lot of other metal that would serve better namely: RS4, CSL, Exiges, GT3 and for the brave Caterham R500 for ultimate thrills.

Can't see myself trading up to this as I'm looking to move back to RWD in a couple of years time.
