I have run out of MEK and as I no longer work in a chemistry lab, I have no idea where to get it from. Does anyone know where I can procure a bottle please? 250ml or so will be all I need and last me for ages.

Thanks in advance thumbup

It's a solvent for polystyrene, try a model shop.

Archery. It's the best stuff I've found for cleaning fletching glue off the arrows. You need to be in a well ventilated room though as the walls start talking to you after a bit. Which can be fun.

I'm led to believe that you can't get MEK anymore, but you can get somthing like it - very good stuff, probably rotting me from the lungs outwards mind....

It is used as a cleaner for glueing ABS and PVC pipe so I would try pipe center or the like. If it is not MEK any more it is very similar

We use it in the aerospace industry, for preparing surfaces before treatments, bonding etc, I know it as been banned along with tricoethylene on the shop floor and can only be used in closed cabins with air fed masks for the users, we now use something called PF solvent now.

Looks nasty.
But after chatting to a professional model maker use Chloroform to 'glue' acrylic sheeting.

I've previously purchased MEK from Performance Chemicals Ltd (www.performance-chemicals.net or 08707 700530) who were quite happy to sell to an individual (rather than a company). Was forced to buy after the local hangar staff were banned from using it, so I could no longer beg an occasional tin.

The cost was about £2 for a 250ml tin, but the P&P was about £20 due to the nature of the liquid. Consequently I opted for a 'lifetime buy' of 20 tins.

I can't see MEK on their product listing, but they still list triclorethane (sp?) so there's clearly still a market for that type of solvent.

Hope that helps.

We still use it by the tin in work (MOD Aerospace), I'd gladly cadge you a tin, but I don't know how you'd get hold of it unless you fancy popping over to east anglia. biggrin

If it's for cleaning fletching glue off arrows I'd have thought acetone would be an acceptable substitute. Arrows are made of wood or possibly metal, right?
