Hi all,

I had my Mk1 up on a ramp early this week and it looks as though the shocks are leaking oil - I'm guessing the rubber gaitors have had it.

The car is not a daily driver and I do want to take it on track, but don't want to turn it into a bone shaker as it will be used as a bit of a tourer on sunny evenings.

So, if I'm thinking that if the shocks need doing I'm considering some new lower spings as well - at certain angles th car looks like it's on stilts.

So, what products would you suggest that won't break the bank?
Also, any other jobs worth while doing while this is being done?

Cheers,
Matt

No help to OP but I'm in a similar boat but with severe budgetary restraints! Might go OEM.....

I Went with the Performance 5 option of their puredrive set up of shocks and springs.

Mainly on cost - one of the cheaper kits, but gets good reviews... but because they are height adjustable. I'm finding on the recomended ride height settings that the car is just too low for the road round here. but i can simply raise the spring pearches and hey presto - increased ride height. (ATM i have about 100mm clearance between sill and road!)

I got two Monroe shocks and rubber gaiters from Autolink UK, didn't cost all that much.

I cleaned and painted the front wishbones and chassis rails while I was at it, and swapped the rusty nuts on the shock and lower UJ mounting to nice shiny nylocks.

Be careful with the 2 small nuts on the topmounts if you want to reuse them, as the studs snap off really easily.

Can you comment on the ride quality my dear lord? I'm umming and ahhing about my options at the moment - it's either refresh my car with shiny new stuff vs sell it and move on.

Cheers Mark, I'll look into the Performance 5 puredrive system.

Jim, good call on the Monroe shocks - did you keep the springs the same or upgrade?

And all you others that have changed your suspension set ups what did you go for? I've started some research but would rather here what fellow PHers reccommend - if you google this subject it seems that every man and his dog can offer you something.

Cheers,
Matt
