Hello chaps.

I've never frequented the Jaguar forum before so be gentle!

A while back our third car - a Vectra - expired. We have two two-seater sports cars. One's a TVR and is useless in winter so...we want a third car to go to the golf club, tool about town, go to the rail station and do the odd trip up to North Wales in. It will occasionally need to carry passengers.

I could go buy another Vectra and this is default position.

But it's dull, dull, dull. And I'm a PHer and a right nutter when it comes to cars so I've found an alternative!

A Jaguar XK8 Coupe MY2000 V-reg 60,000 miles or so at a monumentally reasonable price.

OK. So the rear seats are vestigial but it's got a big boot. Don't care about fuel costs...

I have a few questions:

  • Am I certifiably insane to consider this
  • I like independents - who is reputable in Southern Berkshire/Northern Hants
  • Do expensive things break? What are they?
Needless to say the idea of our "practical runabout" being a Jag seems very cool.

No you are not insane!

Problem areas are the nikasil issue, water pump, timiing chain tensioners and suspension bushes. It would be a good idea to find out if its a steel lined engine or a nikasil one and wether the timing chain tensioners have been upgrade to the 3rd generation ones. Something to also look out for is rust in the sills. The rear wheel arch drainage channels is where it starts. Very easy to sort if its just begun but quite a job if its got into the sills.

Got to love PH! All forms of automotive madness considered quite normal!

hehe

Thanks for the great info. I'll google up what you've mentioned and see if I can find out.

The ad states "minor blemishes" hence good price. The question will be if the minor blemishes are in fact bloody great rustholes in the sills. Of course it looks great in the pictures!

Hopefully that will just be the nose cone stone chipped to shreds. Its plastic so dont worry about it. Unless you potter about at 25 mph everywhere they get mullered.

It's about 6 years since I moved away but there's an independent in Woodcote near Reading (can't remember the name) and the main dealer in Burnham is far better than the one in Reading (avoid like the plague).

Not in your area but I bought a convertible from Christopher Jackson at Alderley Edge.

Have bought other cars there in the past too and always without problem.

However, and this is just my personal view, whilst I thought the car was stunning, very comfortable and the engine was a peach, there was just no feedback whatsoever from the steering.

You either had traction or you didn't. There was no warning whatsoever.

The convertible was lovely!

No you're not insane, I use a XKR as my everyday car.

Try Tom Lenthall, a very good independant 0118-973-7779

Thank you all for your replies.

It appears the Mrs has put the kybosh on this for now and a practical Estate car has been purchased,

But this is not over. Oh no. The time will come again. Thank you for your information. It will help with a future purchase, no doubt...
