Blue GTR for sale - good or bad????
Discussion
Does anyone know any history or info relating to the blue GTR listed today in classifieds?
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/770468.htm
Any info would help before I trek to the other end of the world (Kent) to view it.
Cheers

Looks good valu3e but have to ask if build took a while did it start out as a sports build and go onto GTR or was it GTR from the word go???
When did ultima stop producing the sports and the GTR kit start production ??
shame about the scrape on the n/s rear or is that just a shaddow??

It's 25k, are you saying it should be similar spec and condition as the cars on here for 45k?
I dont know this owner but generally you get what you pay for. So if its a lower price i wouldnt expect a mint example. Same with the 'Ferrari Ultima'.
I think you just have to know what you are shopping for and why the price is set where it is.
I think you would class this as a 'twopennuth'

Yes, I agree with Dave, you need to bear in mind the price, if it's been stored in a garage they can be dry but dusty. He does say it's for sale due to poor health so perhaps he's not be able to clean the car never mind run it. To me part of the process of getting a new car is the cleaning process no?
I wouldn't let it put me off, go have a look.

I agree too
Its the same with any of these cars , unless we see them we dont know what they are like... i still feel it might be a bargain and weather its 25k and dirty or 35k and someone has washed it and given it a hoover, the truth is seeing the car up in the flesh....
Anything, car, house or watch is only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.. If it had been cleaned and hoovered and advertised for 30k would you still be interested in looking at it????
Go see, you can only walk away if you dont like it, or offer silly and see if he takes it(dont forget one went for 20k in the summer)

Thanks for all your comments guys. I dropped the seller an email on Friday about the scrapes and a few other bits but not heard back yet. If he replies with half decent answers, I'll try to get over next weekend for a look. I'm not really too worried about the engine (at the right price), as I fancy one of the LS7 conversions anyway, but the rest of the car must be in good shape. Hopefully some good GTR's will hit the market soon with prices within my budget. Hint!!! Cheers. Andrew

Not a personal attack on you, but the problem with the techno age is no one picks up the phone and just calls anymore
I've played e-mail tag with many a 'prospective' buyer, who you just know have no intention of any follow through. There's no emotion in an e-mail (despite the availability of smilies!), at least with a phone conversation you can get some real time conversation going and a feel for if he is half way genuine. I suggest if you are serious you pick up the phone and talk to the guy.

to me an Ultima for mondeo money it has to be worth going and looking but keep the cash in your pocket if you have any doubt if I had the budget I would be up there and all over it the car has been built on a budget as it has mild steel headers and tbh as the colour is in the gel coat then there is no hardship in flatting out any scrtches and getting it painted properly.
I like the car tbh and I would love to own one even buying this one would be a dream come true for me and then put my own personal touches on it and then pamper her and then up the power and clean her up would be my starting point the car has to be worth a punt IMO

In my opinion, like stated earlier in this thread, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!
eg. 26k cost
stainless exhaust and header approx £2500
repray £3000 - 4000
Brakes if not high spec £1500
hubs?
aircon?
accusump?
engine? - if does not say, assume low power output
The potential list goes on.
You could end up spending another £7000 - £10000 on it to get it to the proper spec.
one other thing is that anyone who cannot be bothered to clean the car before advertising it is always suspect to me and makes me wonder how well the car has been looked after.- in my opinion.

The beauty of the Ultima is simly this:
Do not go and look at an Ultima thinking its like any other car, and with that approach, because its simply not the case.
The beauty of this car is its modular, and just about anything can be changed/replaced/upgraded.
Only insurance reported damage would put me off - because I can simply re-order the parts I may need.
Theres no stigma re modification, servicing, or stamps in the book, so really the overtly cautious approach applied to other cars really doesnt apply.
Look at it realistically, and if things need changing bid accordingly.

For me I would be asking in places like here if anyone knows any info also helps on here if you can find someone that's owned it and look through there post history, can tell you a lot about a car. Maybe drop the seller an email at the same time for more info.
Then I would decide whether or not it would be wasting there/my time chatting on a phone before going to have a look.
Everyone has different ways of doing stuff. In the past I have found out some info on a car that I was maybe going to go and look at just by searching through these forums and an email from the owner.I Found a lot of history/not matching and decided against it...saved wasting My/There time going to see it.
BB
I agree with BB on the email front and for me it means I can think carefully about everything I want to ask and send an email when convenient for me and the seller can respond when it's good for him. He did eventually reply, but the answers were rather vague and avoided some of the questions, so I decided not to pursue it.
In buying a car (Ultima or otherwise) everyone is of course looking for the best deal and many will use the forum to try and geta bit extra info on a car. It doesn't neccessarily mean they are dreamers, perhaps, like me, they are not too knowledgeable and we are talking a lot of money to risk here on what may transpire to be the wrong car for them.
In my case, £25k and do quite a lot of work to it or £35k and do a lot less were both options, as indeed was a complete build from scratch and anything in between. As it happens, subject to dotting i's and crossing t's, I have now purchased a GTR, so thanks for the helpful comments. I may be requesting more technical help in future.
