I will be pulling my transmission this weekend to start the replacement of my clutch. In looking around, the only lightened flywheels I could find are from JAE, who take a stock S4s and machine it slightly to make it compatible with both the S4s and SE clutches. However, Dave Bean does offer an aluminum flywheel for G cars with a heavy duty clutch, which is surprisingly less expensive than the stock parts. However, they have not engineered it for use with the GM crank sensor in later cars. I'm going to look into the crank
sensor this weekend, but thought I'd query the list first. How does the crank sensor read the rotations? Are there magnets on the flywheel and an inductor in the sensor? Any suggestions on how to modify the crank sensor setup for use with an aluminum flywheel? Are
there any other differences to consider? Does anyone know of any aftermarket source for lightended flywheels?

Hi Scott!

Not really an expert on the issue, but I have taken my SE-89 apart a cople of times.
I think the crank-sensor contains an inductor and it is definitely reading "notches" in the flywheel.

Hi Scott,
I installed the JAE wheel several months ago and I am quite pleased with its performance. The wheel is notched for the sensor to read. It is also slightly lighter, but more importantly it is heat treated to a much higher level than the factory wheel making it far more durable. I've been pretty hard on it on several occasions and it just takes it. I'm using the s4s clutch in my 91 SE along with this wheel and unless your car is intended for the track only, I would'nt recomend any other flywheel. Mainly for reasons of durability.

Good luck with it

The crank sensor is magnetic and picks up the notches in the outer edge of the flywheel, if you fit an alloy flywheel the magnetic pick up in the crank sensor won't work.
