Guys,

i was browsing aimlessly in Birmingham today and stumbled across this in the Links of London store:
http://www.linksoflondon.com/online-shop/watches/v...

It is for sale at £1500 and apparently discounts are never given. I tried it on and it felt surprisingly good, i just cannot help thinking that i am paying a massive premium for the name.

I also tried on a few Maurice Lacroix's Masterpiece collection pieces, those were very nice.

If you like it, nothing else matters. Besides you could spunk a few grand on a rolex that no one would take a second look at.

You are not paying for the name here. Since when have Links of London been a premium name in wristwatches?

It may have a swiss movement and a retrograde minute dial but they also fail to point out that it is also a 'regulateur' (the hour and minute hands are on separate subdials). It is also trying too hard to look like a Lange & Sohne or a GO Panomatic.

I think it is massively over-priced for what it is. You'd be much better off with a Sinn Regulateur if you like this style. Take a look at www.chronomaster.co.uk and check on the Sinn pages.

I doubt it will hold its value at all. I am looking for a watch in that price bracket but all of my watches have a pretty hard life. (I wear them all the time) I was thinking of spending a little less on an Omega seamaster that will probably be a little tougher.

Seamasters aren't that robust IMO.
TAG also, bit susceptible to the knocks of life.

That you have a look round a buy what you like. I don't understand why people get hung-up about resale values, how many people actually sell a watch after a few years?

Sorry i meant, what watch would you recommend in relation to a tough watch. Im not all that bothered about resale as i do not intend to sell it (it's a special birthday present). I just do not want the watch to become damaged through every day wear.

I don't know enough about the watch you are interested in to know if it will be tough. I guess it will have an ETA movement which are as reliable as anything else. I suppose it depends what you call everday use, sitting in an office or a battle field in the 3rd world.

All of the time - I've sold tons of watches. Maybe they get a bit boring and are left in a drawer for too long, or I am able to upgrade so sell in order to buy.

Cash down at Greys antique market in London will get you one (no papers) for about that. Or it did last year anyway. Timezone tends to have a few around that kind of money if you keep your eyes open - again, probably no box or papers.

I only paid £1900 for a 2001 Sea Dweller at Greys IIRC.

Gosh, thank you for all of your replies. I do like the look of the Rolex but i haven't seen one that cheap for a while (i would like to have the original papers etc). Regarding the type of wear and tear, i do all sorts including water sports, skiing etc I also spend a fair amount of time working in a workshop for my course at university (motorsport and powertrain).

Im still thinking that a seamaster 300m automatic would suffice?

For watersports you really want a minimum of 100m water resistance - ideally more.

As far as working in your workshop goes, anything will mark so if you want a 100% watch, take it off. Saying that though, I wore a Rolex for about 9 years every day, literally never took it off (gym, working on cars, swimming, holidays, sleeping etc) - sure it was scratched, but a £180 service bought it back to new. I'm sure Omega would be the same.

Sinn or Damasko for that sort of treatment.
