If you have a team of people about you, and one of them puts a phone in your hand and says it's the French president, what are you going to do?
Could happen to anyone in that position, and although I don't like the woman, I don't think she should be thought any the less of for not realising.

She didn't bloody realise for nigh on 5 minutes despite a head of state saying things like, his wife is "so 'ot in bed" or "in France we call joe the plumber Marcel the man with bread under 'is armpit". etc

How do you know they didn't attempt to contact other candidates?
How do you know how the call got rooted to her?
All we know is how she handles calls and quite frankly the answer is badly.
The Queen a more experienced diplomat than Plain was far better in a similar situtation. Tony Blair rumbled twigged that a call from Hague was a fake immediately.
