hi yes i did use google, they gave me all the talk of signing up for a month then anaylising the results. after 6 weeks i spoke to them, them claimed they had phoned me up twice but i hadnt recieved any calls. they then said they werent perpared to do anything else and i was on my own. very bad customer service.
you would need to sign for google anaylitics then that way you can check the results. also keep an eye on the money they take. the results i paid for never seemed to add up.

Can't understand it. I can either run my business or be an expert on Google, not both.

I use them extensively for one particular business (high volume, medium value transactions, approx 50p CPC). What kind of issues are you having?

I find them reliable, never have an obvious issues with click fraud that have not been detected - according to my reports around about 4% of clicks are double (+) and are refunded automatically.

My only moan is that geographical targetting is not always that accurate due to ISP locations (poss?).

I'm sure there are plenty of agencies that will help you do this if you dont want to do it yourself. You probably need to understand how competitive your area is before jumping in.

No way of checking?

Google itself provides you with all the tools you need to monitor ROI whether it be on the basis of actual online sales or contact being made via the web.

Then theres the standard referral tracking one assumes you're doing to monitor your advertising spend anyway?

This is ignoring the extended gamut of statistics available in Google Analytics.

I'd guess that anyone can become conversant with the Adwords CPC model, the tools used to measure its effectiveness and monitor ROI with no issue inside of 24 hours.

Its hardly onerous.

Google Adwords is an excellent way of driving business to your site, but you *really* need to clue up on it first (suggest starting with the Adwords Google Groups) as otherwise it's very easy to burn a LOT of cash for f-all return.

I have used adwords... be extrememly wary of companies that will manage your account for you... for a fee of course. It really isn't that hard to get to grips with it yourself. I personally think it is far too expensive. I know of one businessman who pays google around £60,000 per year to sell around £250,000 of stock... Take out his other costs of running the business and of whats left google probably take more than he does.

It's a great way to get good exposure for a brand new website but long term one should look at optimising the site for the natural searches. Studies have shown that google users are begining to develop sponsored ad blindness and are simply ignoring the ads in favour of the real results.

If you 'personally find it too expensive' you aren't using the system properly, this is why people use SEM specialists - and they usually are worth the fee. The way in which you optimise your sites, adverts and Adwords account structure plays a massive part in keeping CPCs low and your rank high. I've given Google over £60k/month for years now, and as long as you're setup correctly and know how to calculate your bid price, you will make a small fortune.

It's too late in the day for a detailed formula, but this will get you started:

Max CPC (Cost Per Click) <= % Average Sale Conversion * (1 - % Desired Margin) * Retail Price

If anyone needs any assistance, drop me a line, always happy to help and have a few tools to assist with such things as conversion tracking and bulk uploading (I currently bid on over 18,000 keywords, with all CPCs automatically updated daily, based on conversions and price changes). smile

Rather than spending your money on Google Adwords, which can be expensive with only a limited return on your investment, why not get your website optimised? PM me if you need some help.

For instant results I can't think of anything better.

Of course organic SEO is the holy grail for any website and should be integral with the design and build or sorted out later on if it has not - but well targetted advertising (by country / keyword / search type and time of day) that can be tracked and the ROI measured accurately can be great value.

Without naming names we are running an adwords a campaign for a brand new site launched 3 weeks ago for a small local retail business and adwords is returning 10x the spend in sales across the UK. This has been a real eye opener to me.

Obviously everyone's an expert... depending on what product you're pushing, Google Adwords is not always the best way to spend your money... IMHO smile

Surely anyone promoting SEO & website optimisation would also be doing some adwords setup / management for their clients - otherwise you wouldn't be giving them the whole picture and missing out on valuable traffic / revenue.
