Touring in Thailand

Apologies if this has been done before but the search facility's not working...
Next februaryish I'm hoping to spend a bit of time diving off the west coast of Thailand and thought it might be a good idea, since I'll spend a week lazing around underwater, to cycle there from Bangkok. A quick google reveals some operators that booke 4-star hotels and use brand new bikes, and some that use raleigh choppers and you stay in people's garden sheds and leave before the shed owner wakes up.
However as with all this sort of stuff, a personal recommendation goes a long way, so has anyone ridden the route before, got a one-way rental, recommendations of places to stay, or even know a tour operator that does such a thing?
Ideally I'd like a decent bike (and save the hassle of taking my own) but I'm not over-fussed about nice hotels.
