"free petrol" they proudly proclaim in a full page ad in the telegraph. The small print footer explains that BMI are abolishing fuel surcharge on their flights.

I find it more than somewhat concerning that BMI are running their fleet on optimax. I think walking would be safer.

(is this some crazy dumbing down, or what? I dispair sometimes)

At least you don't need any small print to explain your username.

I`m not with you here, where does Optimax come into this? You could`nt run a plane on this stuff so what makes you say BMI are?

I've seen it on the side of some of the fuel bowsers at various airports but given that Optimax is a long way from Avgas I think it's more of an advert as opposed to a description of the contents of the tank!

Presumably many ground vehicles would use it? Planes don't generally fill up from bowsers.

Surely jet fuel is cloer to diesel than petrol. They run industrial gas turbines on it.

Right. In an effort to save face I had to take a pic of the ad to show you 'orrible lot what I meant.

I guess I was trying to make a point, albeit tacitly, that marketeers should refrain from such dumbing down. This ad, although makes an interesting 'hook', is totally technically incorrect in what it implies. Were the ad, "free fuel", then I would have no problems with it, it would have been fine.

I just dispair at the thought of these marketing types, and people who sign this off thinking, "Look, people don't know planes like a bit of kerosene, so we'll just call it petrol as that's all they'll understand and want their grubby mitts on, the dolls"..... despite the fact that their birds would drop out the sky like lead balloons if they really did put petrol in them.

I think it would have had less impact if it had said "Free jet fuel".

But I'm not sure why this would make me not want to fly BMI.....

Sorry, we have a reputation to uphold.

This place can be like Have I Got News For You sometimes. If you aren’t going to sit there and laugh with and at them you sure as hell better be as quick(er) and smart(er) than them or you are going to have a long fall at some point.

I've hung around here long enough to get the gist wink I thought this content would have been of interest to PH plane buffs and those who can't stand bad marketing alike. I personally find the ad utterly bizarre, and thought it would be amusing to post / rip it to shreds. Of course, the ad has been defended and I've been ripped to shreds instead.

Yeah you are right. I should have seen it coming biggrin

I forgive you for good use of the word banale.
Agree that adds like that make me angry too. IN themselves they are banale.
Also agree that you deserve at least some stick for bothering to post though.
Well done.

Banale? What's that mean then? You can't forgive someone for good use of an imaginary word.

Anyway, there are far more reasons not to fly BMI than this ad, starting with the fact that they are crap.

Bushmaster,

Blindswelledrat mis-transposed Banal from my correct spelling (perhaps something in his name too). See: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/banal

..and yes. I did just make up "mis-transposed" wink

Blindswelledrat,

BSR>Well done.

Thankyou. Peer respect and acceptance is all I sought.

Stu

No. I'm lying, this was not about peer respect. I wanted to vent over an ad that made me mad. For some reason this ad has gotten under my skin. It really annoys me and makes BMI look totally stupid IMO. I'm going down with the ship on this.......

Normally I like to be among the killing crew, but I am with you on this one.
It is one of the most annoying adverts ever.
Could have been a great thread if it was titled "most annoying ads". YOu'd have had no end of praise and support.
Its all in the title
