SEMA Merc GLK Concepts

'Pikes Peak' GLK among freaky SEMA concepts

The RENNtech GLK
The RENNtech GLK
Here at PH Towers we are going to stick our collective necks out and say that the new Mercedes GLK is not one of our favourite cars to look at. So whether these one-off custom versions that are heading to SEMA improve its looks is debatable but not out of the realms of possibility. The German firm was happy to give four of its new compact SUVs to tuners, to be used as a blank canvas. What they came back with ranges from the bizarre to the ridiculous.

Well-known auto tweaker Brabus perhaps produced the most conventional version – the Widestar – which features extended wheel arches, new wheels and bumpers, and a customised interior. Then it gets weird.

Boulevard Customs decided to lop the roof off the GLK, added a wide-body kit and 26” wheels. The result is called the Urban Whip and looks like a cross between a Golf buggy and a child’s pedal car.

The RENNtech Rally Racer is inspired by a Pike Peak hillclimb car but features a hybrid powertrain, with the electric motor giving an extra acceleration boost off the line and through the twisties. Finally the legendary Motor Cars has created the Four Corners Rock Crawler, which has a tougher 4WD system plus a winch to tow skateboarders.

I dearly hope the person who designed that RENNtech monstrosity has been sacked.

In fairness the 'Blank Canvas' was no oil painting to start with - no pun intended.

In fairness, that's a given, being that it looks like a brick, is built like a brick and is as interesting...

Yes. However Brabus seems to have made it look reasonably like something a sane person might almost consider buying maybe after consuming a mild amount of marajuana while listening to some gangsta rap music. The others look like the sort of thing a certified looney tune would like to buy after consuming a lethal concoction of every hallucingen known to man while listening to a hard core techno version of ride of the valkyries.

10:01.408 in the "follow on" model to the car I posted above, Nobuhiro 'Monster' Tajima was at the wheel.

It's going to be very difficult to buy. Every RAP star will want one...
Maybe Merc will add a fur and gold chain as an optional extra wink
