Does it do any harm to have a cd player or any music making device in the steamy atmosphere of a kitchen. I'm talking about damage to the interior workings.

Depends! Factors inc:

- how high up is the unit? (More grease with the warm air at the top)
- how far away is it from the cooker?
- is it just something like a radio rather than a cd player where the drawer opens and closes in a greasy atmosphere?

Stick it on a work surface away from the cooker and you should be fine....

So long as it's not close enough to the source of the steam for condensation to build up inside the thing, it should be fine

Yeah I know about having the window open etc--but there can be a lot of condensation in the atmosphere in a kitchen .

Does it do a cd player or some such thing (I-pod ) any harm internally.

Not talking about a radio here.

Had a DAB radio in the kitchen for the last 2 or 3 years with no problem, also a TV.

Go for it we've had a radio and TV in our kitchen for ages, and we also have a radio in the bathroom.

I have a radio on the kitchen sink (life on the edge, me).

Should be fine - assuming you're not in some industrial Chinese restaurant kitchen.

It would only do them harm if the condensation built up on the inside enough to short something out, but it'd take an excessive amount of steam to do that as they're normally well sealed. Especially the iPod. I wouldn't worry about it

I have had a 14" CRT tv in my kitched for the last 10 years, still going strong. Plugged into the extra feed from my Sky+ box so gets all the usual radio stations and MTV etc

I've had loads of cd players die because customers use them in kitchens - grease gets on the laser lens, then the error correction goes mad, turns the lazer up to 11, and the mech lasts 1/2 the time compared to the same player in "normal" conditions.

Why not use mp3 / ipod? things with no cd to put in / eject costantly are good, or if you want a micro hifi affair, try the onkyo / denon nutters that record to mp3 - more convenient, and no moving parts = no reliability issues.

I had the exact same worry with our DAB radio. I decided to wrap it in spontex, that way the condensation would get soaked up before it damaged the electronics.

There are systems designed for bathroom installations, thus, for such conditions. That might be a consideration.
