How can I find out the retail price of a Seiko Black Monster in Singapore or Malaysia? Going out there in a few weeks so want to work out whether it's cheaper just buying online or from a shop with some haggling.

i'm interested in this thread as I'm headed out there soon too and curious to know if I can 'upgrade' my Crosswind to a Chronomat with some spondoolies thrown ontop...

Hope this helps.

I asked a colleague to price up a watch for me only last month ;

Breitling 17330 Seawolf Steel
List Price: SGD 6020
After Discount Offer: SGD 4500 to 4800 (exchange rate circa 2.5)

The prices were all inclusive of GST 6.5% which will be claimable by foreigners upon departure at Changi, making it a good deal to me.

I worked there a few years back and saved 32% on my Omeaga Speedmaster Moonphase.

Steer clear of Lucky Plaza on Orchard road. Top deals can be haggled for in larger reputable stores !!! Always be prepared to walk away as there are plenty of stores with better deals.

I was over there in September but only checked the Omega and Sinn prices. There happened to be a branch of the famous Hour Glass store downstairs from the Marriott where I stayed. Nice shop with helpful staff but the Sinn prices were only slightly better than Chronomaster's, and depending on model the Omegas were a tad cheaper than the UK. This was after the store discount and tax free allowance.

As for Seiko's in general they seem to be cheaper in the general region. I paid about £80 equivalent for a black Monster in Manila.

Hard times in Singapore at the moment and some bargains to be had. The watch shops in Changi have started going downmarket a little a pulling expensive brands back into town shops - also ready for the Xmas Season.
Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru are also cheaper than Singapore but you may not find such a good selection.

Dependent upon make, you should get 30-35% off. Add the GST refund, they are very cheap in Sing.

What is available in the Airport, I will be passing through in a few weeks, probably won´t have time to get far from the Airport. Interested in IWC, Sinn & Omega.
I did a short search on the web, found a list of some stores, but not of stock.
Thanks

further to my post - do they have places that will take in your watch so you can 'trade up' so to speak?

It will be between $sg95 and $130 depending on the shop.

If you are after the "classic" one you will have to do some serious leg work, (probably Bugis / Chinatown) but they are out there.

I can recomend some good reputable 2nd hand watch shops in Singa that will take the watch (and you) to the resoective manufacturer main agent for verification too.

I would not buy anything except a knock-off DVD in JB.

Depends on the shop - one that sells second hand will, one thats doing brand new will not.

For new Watches Cortina Watches are probably the best (with best shop in Raffles City Mall (opposite Raffles Hotel)

No grudge, just lived in Singapore and Malaysia as an expat and now as a Perminant Resident in Singapore for 8 years off and on now!!

JB is one of the counterfit hubs of SE Asia! Nothing wrong with the town (although your average Singaporean will tell you that you will get raped, pillaged and killed in 30 seconds) but i would not go there to buy anything "high end" ... even the VPower is probably knock-off!!

Speaking of knock offs, I stumbled across a website that showed how to tell the difference between a genuine... wait for it... Seiko 5 and a fake. Why are people producing fake Seiko 5s??? They're not exactly expensive watches in the first place. I suppose there must be a manufacturer out there doing Smart Roadster bodykits for MX5s. nuts
