Hi,

Just wanted to ask if anybody can give me some advice on where to start with EPOS machines. It will be used in a small clothes shop.

I've been looking on ebay but have no idea what I really need. We have a short six month lease so ideally, we would like to spend as little as possible and then rebuy if the business takes off.

Since it is a retail shop, I know we will need a basic system that can print price labels with a barcode and small description. Then the machine will need a 'scanner' thing to read the labels. Lastly, it needs to be linked in with a till for cash and be able to print reciepts too.

How much should I be looking to spend on a second hand unit that can do the above. Is Ebay the most straightforward place to get hold of such a machine. Alternatively, is there any cheap software out there that can be used with a laptop so all we need to do is buy the scanner attachment and the till etc.

Thanx for any help in advance,

Tony.

Well if you are going down the laptop route you will need:

Epos software
Till receipt printer £160
Till cash draw £80
Barcode Scanner £120
Barcode label printer £180
Customer display £70

So about £600 of hardware + the laptop + software. The price of the barcode scanner is quite high because I would reccomend one that can be used as both a handheld and a presentation scanner. Two releativley cheap EPOS software solutions spring to mind. Actinic Epos Solo and WASP QuickStore POS. Both will sell you a bundled kit to turn your laptop in to a POS station and is probably the cheapest way to get started but I wouldnt recommend either of the scanners they are bundling.

Don't forget something to read chip & pin - I have some contacts for hardware and software, and payment accounts if you need them (that take EVERY known card) - these are only people I have done business with and would recommend, I have no commercial interest.

Msg me if you want some details.

Thanx for the responses,

Can anybody tell me if most software will work with the PDQ credit card machine or whether the PDQ machine will just attach to a laptop.

Thanx
