Hi, I am contemplating buying a 1998 A4 saloon with the 2.5 tdi engine, manual, 67k, FSH in silver. It is up for around 3000 and seems like an honest car. I have , however, heard rumours that this engine is not the most reliable. I know the PD engines will do 200,000+ miles without any issues and I would have thought a larger capacity multi cylinder diesel would be even better than that? I will be doing 100 miles on the motorway each day rather than driving around country lanes and B roads if that makes a difference.

Thanks

If your just using it on the motorway, why go for the 2.5? The 1.9TDi 130 is just as quick, more reliable and does better mpg. A friend has just got rid of his V6 2.5 because of the poor fuel consumption, but the 1.9 will do 50mpg all day long.
