A move further into London and it's stop/start traffic, on top of plenty of M25/M4 miles, has me seriously thinking about an auto of some sort and a DSG-equipped Golf or similar would fit the bill nicely. Possibly a GTI, there seems to be plenty of 3-year-old cars to choose from now.

I know these gearboxes have lots of expensive bits inside and can be prone to failures involving replacement of mechatronics and the like. Are failures of this sort usually covered by the third party warranty companies? Has anyone looked into this before and found ones that do cover it at a reasonable cost? Any to avoid?

All aftermarket warranties are utter bobbins.

VW do an "All Component Warranty" which will cover all parts of the DSG gearbox.

Another thing to bear in mind is that VW won't honour any claims with the DSG box unless the oil and filter are changed at the recommended 40k mile intervals.
