Got to be a JLC.

With that budget and a discount should get something in the Master Compressor line up

mon dieu... with that budget a JLC all the way...

master comp. or memovox w. an exotic strap (say stingray)

an IWC Portuguese is just plain boring in comparison (flame suit on smile

if you are not a watch expert you would not know that they the 2 above were not from down the local market for a fiver each, get a Rolex Sub bi metal.

LOL ..depends on whether you choose to wear your watch for as status symbol to say look at me, or just because you are a watch enthusiast, both are fine choices.

Agree with all the options put forward, all lovely watches, but my money would be in the Rolex line up, only because they hold their money better and are easier to sell/trade
Go for a nice Bi metal sub, or perhaps a bi metal daytona, your budget might just stretch to one.
Failing that go for the JLC, i have had the pleasure of owning an IWC portuguese, but they are too dressy and will probably end up only being worn on special occasions, another advantage to the Rolex, you can wear it all the time.
Thanks,
Andrew

Would say a bimetal Yachtmaster, not the new design though, but the only one I've seen is now going for 6k, used to go for about 4200!

Had the option to trade my IWC for a Bi metal yachtmaster, wish i had taken the trade, an awesome looking watch in the flesh, well worth the money.
Thanks,
Andrew

On that note, I bet you think that patek philippe's originate from Elisabeth Duke @ Argos? hehe

If you have ever seen inside the back of a Rolex and compared this to watches in a marginally higher price bracket, the Rolexes are almost agricultural in their build quality and construction.

If you want a rolex for the image, just get a good copy for $200, then go and buy a decent watch?

WRONG!!!
Sorry but a rolex is built to withstand constant daily wear, not to be a safe queen like most Patek And A. lange, the movement is designed to withstand shock, knocks, high and low temperatures and constant running, the watch case and bracelet is crafted to take more abuse and hide unsightly marks, Pateks and such are designed to be ingenious with beautiful designs and super slim movements, which in all honesty are actually rather fragile, this does not make the Rolex agricultural, it makes it brilliant. Wear a Patek every day for a few years and see if it is still ticking, i garuntee whole heartedly the Rolex will be, designed for purpose, if it looks agricultural to you, then i guess a Merc or a Beemer is a tractor, designed to be good every day, not just on the weekend.
Thanks,
Andrew
BTW i don't own a Rolex and as such i am not biased

Just in case you never get to see inside a 'tool' rolex, check out the link below and read the last section, "some personal conclusions" (albeit this is the authors own opinion)..... http://www.timezone.com/library/horologium/horolog...

Seriously, I know of 2 subs and 1 daytona which have not been very well finished. they may have been 'friday afternoon' pieces, but don't kid yourself. I wear an explorer II every day (and it doesn't keep time that well despite a recent AD service....) so an not 'anti Rolex', but I think there is a LOT better out there for the price. Also, a lot more subtle watches are available for those in the know.
