I find it unnerving as I walk along, passing by other people who are muttering or openly talking to themselves. Not just the odd imprecation after their wife has just moaned at them, or "now which shop was it?" while they scan the windows, but full-on question and answers or a running commentary of their thoughts, as though they are on the phone.

They can't all be nutters and mostly it seems to be older people. There seem to be a lot more people doing it now than, say, 10 years ago. I encounter at least one a day either as I walk to or from work, the mumbling about seeing their daughter later or what vegetables there are in existence growing louder as I approach and pass.

Anyone else notice this, or are a mutterer themselves?

Nope, they are not talking to anyone. No phone, no second voice.

I do it. Especially in TESCO. It clears the way and makes my shopping quicker.

I must confess, I am a 'mutterer' and I probably look like the local nutter when I'm doing it.

If I've got an issue on my mind that's bugging me, I will quite often go for a walk to thrash it out (rather than coming on here like I used to and make a fool of myself). I won't necessarily talk out loud to myself, but I do sometimes, under my breath.

And here's the thing - I find places like small secluded public parks in residential areas, public footpaths and graveyards very quiet, calming places in which to do so.

So apologies for being that strange bloke wandering around the graveyard talking to himself. I'm not trying to summon the spirits of the dead or waiting for an MI5 contact, I've probably just had a bad day.

So that's why women are supreme at arguing. They do a mock first. Has any man ever won an argument with a woman? I've only managed to score a few marks on the periphery of a node of a stab of a logical point. That is, if I'm lucky to catch her before she realises she's wrong, finds another confusing tangent and drags something up from months ago.

I find it amusing that you should prefer to make yourself look weird amongst people you live near to, rather than anonymously among a load of other anonymous people you'll probably never meet. Does that mean the great unwashed on here mean more to you than your community? If so, thumbup.

Me too. People must think I am a right nutcase but it gets people out of the way and stops me getting stressed.

I talk to myself most of the time, I even answer myself and have whole conversations. I guess I have been driven to madness by living and working alone for so long.

That pervy bloke from work who was making you feel uncomfortable was your imaginery friend, wasn't it?

And that bloke who is arguing with you (in your head) over your holiday destination; made that up as well didn't you?

Bloody knew it.
