2.2 diesel duratec auxilary belt damper?

My mondeo ST sound absolutely terrible at the moment at tick over. Took it along to a ford place and was told it was the auxilary belt damper.
They all do that sir after a few years. He told me it was nothing to worry about if I could live with the noise (yes I was shocked too) so i said thanks will leave it then.
but Ive just had a thought, if its an easy job I could atempt it myself. Anybody done this? is it worth a DIY or should I get the Ford garage to do it next service

Don't have many pics but here you go
I was thinking of selling but I honestly can't think of what I could replace it with. There is nothing I know without spending a lot lot more money that comes close.
I'd love an A4 or a 3 series but can't afford those. Its probably worth what 5.5k? or was that last week
probably about 4k now. Needs a few little things tidying. Think I'll keep it for another year at least but feel free to make me an offer

You need to take the car back to your dealer and tell them to look up TSB (Technical service Bulletin) 18/2005. This consists of a new belt,tensioner and damper. Below is the symptoms:
Should a customer express concern about a drumming noise from the accessory drive belt with the engine at idle, the probable cause is a high accessory drive belt excitation caused by crankshaft vibration being transmitted into the accessory drive belt drive. The drumming noise only occurs during idle and should disappear at engine speeds above 1000 rpm.
To rectify this concern a revised crankshaft
pulley together with a new accessory drive belt and accessory drive belt tensioner MUST be installed, without exception. The reason for replacing the accessory drive belt and the accessory drive belt tensioner is because they will both deteriorate after prolonged exposure to belt flap.
This TSB contains a diagnostic guide for checking the affected crankshaft pulleys and the accessory drive belt.

I did this repair on a family member's car the other week. It's not difficult, just a bit of a frustrating fiddle - the main issue is removing the tensioner.
Any independant garage should be able to do the work, and if you want to keep costs down, just fit a new belt and tensioner, and leave the dual mass pulley. If the noise hasn't gone after you've replaced the belt and tensioner, then fit the pulley - the pulley is an easy item to remove / replace, but quite pricey to buy.
