G'day
Bit of a slightly odd question here, but I'm sure you're used to it from me

Assuming one jacks up ones rear end......then one puts her in gear and makes her go brmmmm........would one expect both rear wheels to spin merrily, not just one???

Shall I explain my bizarre quesion? On my failed MOT a while ago, one of the failure points was rear nearside binding. I've since replaced both rear calipers and stripped, greased, reassembled+adjusted the handbrake calipers and can't see why it could be them binding. I keep having nasty thoughts of perhaps there's something up with the bearings or even some strange jiggery pokery in the diff???

That wheel is noticeably stiffer to spin by hand too........hmmmmmmm......oh well, back to my homebrew cider I guess

Dave
It's normal on a non lsd diff.
But one wheel noticibly stiffer than the other is not.
Grease the UJs. Run it for a while, check them again.

Thanks Jeff and Jeff

They're nicely greased but the trouble is I can't really go for a drive until the drive to the MOT, by which time it'll be a bit late to fix whatever her problem may be I changed the bearing on t'other side, but this one seems fine, no play or owt. I don't have a desire to change another one yet, even though I do have the bits!

Do you get pulled over a lot?

I have never been pulled over and asked to produce a valid MOT or been given a producer. Personally i would not worry about driving an MOT failure if i thought to be safe, and i was fixing the problem anyway.

Fair comment, but (there's always a but, eh?)

Supose you are driving along being a good boy, all is fine, then Bang! numpty emerges from side road in front of you and you can't avoid a collision. Numpty claims whiplash and calls police. Police ask both drivers to produce documents within 7 days.

You can guess the rest. Apart from any police interest, accident suddenly becomes your fault. Insurance company claims car isn't roadworthy - no insurance. Numpty's insurance company chases you personally.

Worth the risk? You decide.

On the original problem why don't you take both calipers off and then see if there's any binding? That would narrow it down to bearings or UJs. If not, then you have a sticky caliper. Probably.

I thinks that's the first on the agenda today, it's just I need to tighten the handbrake cable in any case so don't think it's them. The cable shall be removed and see what happens. If you've worked on the rear calipers you'll know why I don't want to remove them and they are new

As far as legalities go. Not driven her much, but when I first got her, twice in a couple of months/1000 miles. Not for being naughty, just for looking youthful and having a TVR, fair play to them, it was all very pleasant. I think she's pretty safe, but don't want to randomly get 6points (no tax or MOT) and £xxx fine.

hmmmm, didn't realise that, still not going to anyways.

Went out today with a list of final bits to do, including fix the prob mentioned earlier. All done apart from the replacement of a couple of bolts through the body. Can't reach both sides at once so that can wait till t'moz. Think the prob with the wheel is fixed by a big blob of more copper grease on the handbrake caliper.

Will see, MOT shall be booked as soon as possible, depending if I can get time off work. Couple of things to get done by them, wheel+headlight alignment+maybe emissions. Will pay for any minor niggles to get MOT, I don't think they'll find any......

Just a thought.....when I jacked the rear of mine up the uj's always knock. I believe this is normal because of the angle of the drive shafts. Have you tried jacking up the hubs slightly to lessen the angle. Maybe there is no problem.

Thanks for the idea, but she was sitting on axle stands on the trailing arms at the time so they would be at around the normal angle. I'm thinking she just needs a good run in now. Hmmm, only 5 miles to the MOT!

She did like her oil change though, oil pressure up to 35-40psi at idle from 15psi before!!! First one she's had while I've had her. Finally managed to get the plug out yesterday by entertaining welding of big nut to my rounded sump plug!
