On SKY News this morning, a black guy in Times square was interviewed. He was a normal bloke in a sweatshirt and jeans, maybe 18 years old.

I'm fairly sure on radio 4 that they said in some southern states mixed race marriages are illegal. That strikes me as somewhat backwards.

Yanks don't understand irony, Limeys just complain about it in the national press.

I see your point Soovy but you could equally say that this bloke is thick as st because that's always been the case anyway and he's only just noticed.

I think the point is that if you interviewed a young scruff at 3am in Piccadilly circus after the election of this country's new leader the response would be

"Elecshun? I don't give a fark mate, farking waste of time. As long as I still get me giro every month for me Bensons I'm happy larry"

I think the point is that if you interviewed a young scruff at 3am in Piccadilly circus he'll probably turn out to be a Kiwi or a Polish minicab driver, such is the multicultural melting pot wot is London.

What a load of cynical balls. It`s perfectly possible to do exactly that here (and without any new labour social engineering). In my modest circle alone there are several oxbridge grads of all flavours, most of whom are thoroughly common!

I actually also think it is now possible for a black briton to be voted as PM in this country, particulalry if the circumstances were comparable to the US.

The most spectacular missing of a point ever.

I'm saying that it's the difference in ATTITUDE. This guy WANTS to work to achieve, rather than say "oh life is so unfair".

I think the difference here is we are more prepared to see how they get on with the job, rather than running around 2 months before they start declairing that we have just elected the saviour of the human race.

We are simply a less excitable nation. Or as my boss put it "As a Brit we expect the world to give us a swift kick in the balls every now and then."

Too much of a generalisation really. But the poster's atitude DOES emphasise one major difference of which he is a perfect example -

Americans - essentially optimistic and positive by nature

British - essentially pessimistic and negative by nature

No, got your point. My point is that I don`t beleive that many people are in anyway as negative as you seem to assume.

By appearances it's far more than Soovy suggested, where's the evidence beyond appearancves that it's less?
