Was thinking about this last night. A friend of mine left Scotland 3 years ago when he was 19 to head for the Bahamas for good, so got all the politics sorted out and went. I maintain regular email contact with him and he visits home once a year. He settled in Mayaguana Island and has his own small fishing buisness. I thought to myself sun, sea, sand, no rat race no financial worries / commitments and laid back living. Has anyone else ever thought about doing this?

Only two things keeping me in England. I love my house and I love my racing. Unfortunately I can't move my entire house and as far as I'm aware GB is the best place for club racing, so I'm stuck with that monocular scottish cumstain and his hoard of proles

Never once have I thought about moving to a desert island.

Actually I was walking the dog on HIGHTOWN beach, where the river alt drains into End of the Mersey, and lots of smart boats are moored. I could have swam to a Yaught and disappeared into the horizon.

Mr Pod. Why do you often capitalise place names, and give out your postcode so willingly?

Are these code signals to the PH womenfolk to abduct you? Just email them a TomTom itinerary.

The year before last, when the family business was sold, I got the idea into my head that I wanted to go to the USA, buy a typical Yank droptop car, and just tour around for half-a-year or so. The intention would be that I'd enjoy the country so much that I'd end up settling there. i have a few uni friends that live in various spots and the constantly tell of how great their lives are.

It never happened. I realised that it was all a little extreme for me, and so I dismissed the idea as fantasy and stayed in England (although I did relocate primarily to the South Coast.

Who's that then and where does he live on Maya? I may have met him - I've been there 6 or 7 times bonefishing recently.

think about it daily. nothing against the uk per se, i just fancy a change and experience something different.

tried buying a hotel in buenos aires a couple of years back, intending to go halves with a mate who'd jsut returned from travelling s.america. couldn't get a mortgage from anywhere, so we binned the idea. a yeae later we found a better place in chile but an earthquake intervened.

been tied down with property the past couple of years but nearing the point where i can sell/rent it out. got a couple of options with work - either move to france or the netherlands - but still think about doing something radically different like your mate. a hostel somewhere nice would do me, low key and low hassle.

out of interest, how much cash did he take out with him? was he already a fisherman or was it a complete 'from-scratch' arrangement.
