Just considering booking a trip around the world with wife. Have been quoted a good price for a trip that would allow up to six destinations.

Given neither of us are particurly well-travelled outside Europe and eager to get a good mix of destinations, I would like opinions on what cities people would consider.

I am particularly keen on comment on destinations in South East Asia, Far East, Australia and South Pacific.

Early ideas include stopping in Hong Kong for a few days, down to New Zealand for a week and then onto Fiji before heading onto a stop in USA.

We think alike. I had all those on my suggestions too, but I removed Dubai because it's too commercial/glitzy and direct trips from the UK are cheap enough that it can be done on its own later. Scandinavia because OP has already seen Europe, and again, it's cheap and close enough to get to on a separate trip. Alaska--err, it's really, really cold there now. But yes, absolutely fantastic place to go. China--big cities are too polluted, outside is too underdeveloped and difficult to manage unless you have a local guide. But I do like your suggestions. smile

Cape Town - great suggestion.

India - where, though? Delhi is bland and boring and polluted. Bombay? Too polluted and crowded with virtually nothing to see. Goa? Filthy drug den. Varnasi for the temples, maybe? National parks? Poorly run and devoid of big game. Agra and Jaipur - maybe, but that's a one-day trip.

Nepal might be a better choice.

How long are you going for? Many of the RTW tickets allow for you to fly into and out of different airports - meanin you can do a fair bit of overlanding inbetween - but of course you need time to this properly.

I went for more or less 8 months and did the following....

UK - Miami - overland - Washington, New York, Niagra, Chicago, Detroit, Vegas, San Francisco, LA, Daytona Beach Miami - FLY - Lima, Peru - Overland down the west coast, inland to Cusco and Macchu Picchu, south into Chile, further south then crossing into Argentina, south, back into Chile, ferry back up through the southern fjords, Santiago, FLY, Easter Island, FLY, Frechn Polynesia, FLY New Zealand north and south islands, FLY, Sydney Australia, overland up the east coast to Cairns FLY, Bali.

Of course if you only have 6 weeks this won't be much use to you!

Any questions gimme a shout.

Cheers

Nepal is a great idea - only problem is I don't know how many of the RTW tickets stop at Kathmandu - depending on how long the OP is going for, I figured he could head up to Nepal from India where most of the flights go to.

Sadly he seems to have posted and bu**ered off!! Making it rather hard to assist!!

Did you stay in 'new' or 'old' Dubai?

If you have enough time then forget the plane and go the whole way overland - that is the best way to really get into places.

If you have to go on a plane and have not been out of Europe, obvious places amongst others would be:

Istanbul
Delhi
Mumbai
Bangkok
KL
Ho Chi Minh
Any of the Ausytralian cities
Santiago
Buenos Aires (amazing)
Rio
All the obvious north American cites
Vancover

Just loads... It all depends on how long you have and what you want to see. But, really if you can avoid planes then do it. Overland travel is just SO much better!!
