Having used a fair dollop of Vaseline to prime the oil pump on the Grif I was wandering what effect this has on the oil ( new mobile 15W50 ). Should it be changed?

If you change the oil, then you'll need to re-pack the oil pump . . with Vaseline.

Then repeat until you realise that it's 'petroleum' jelly and will therefore be burnt of without causing any issues to the oil or engine.

Or alternatively buy an oil priming tool that fits into the dizzy drive which drives the pump.

Is this only really an isssue when the oil has been allowed to completly drain for a long time before refilling ?

Or you could just go with the old remove the spark plugs and turn the engine over on the starter for a few cranks.

This is predominantly a prob with pre-serpentine engines. Serpentine engines should self prime after a simple oil change. If left dry for a while then some form of priming may be necessary. Cant be done via distributor on serp because the oil pump is crank driven.

If you are reasonably speedy (inside an hour) with the oil change this isn't an issue.

Thanks for comments, but I was really interested in the effect of the vaseline on the new oil. I take it that it has no detremental effect. The priming of the pump has been done and was successful.

Within an hour! You should have seen the performance I had with a new filter filled with oil, get the old one off fast (HaHa) then clen faces and crew new filter on fast.
I thought it was just a matter of a few minutes.
DAMN!!

I have never had a problem, but I do always fill the new filter and put it back straight away. Messy!

Agreed. One should never prime one's pump with KY. Makes a terrible mess.

yikes .

On the serious side, I used to have a Stag with the RV8 engine, luckily someone gave me the primer tool which I used as the oil would drain down over a 3 month ;non-drive' period.
Now I've discovered the Land Rover filter with the non-return valve...Great Invention!

P LERR3340 Element - Filter L01B on the invoice for the last one I bought. Fill it with oil before you fit it.
