I have noticed about five times this morning a whining noise from the rear when I am in gear..If this is the diff what are the symptoms and how much will it cost me to have the diff rebuilt?

Does the noise disappear when you dip the clutch and have you checked the level of the diff oil? If it's topped up and still whining it's probably the crown wheels on the way out and it will get progressively worse until it's unbearable. An exchange on the old unit for a recon is around 700 notes, a second hand unit from the breakers is around 450 iirc, or a shiny new one is 1500, or 1000 on an exchange basis. Then there's the fitting which is around 3 hours at whatever your mech's hourly rate is.

At the moment it is hard to tell as it is only doing it randomly when warm.. I will have to get my garage to have a look at it for me I think..

I see you have had some simliar cars to me - I have had a Chim 450 and a P1. I liked the Chim although the cerbs were far more exciting. I hated the P1 - slow and too be-spoilered and wide boy. The Cerbs put the P1 to shame imho.
By the way - you have your own garage. Wow ! ;-)

Agree with you on the P1, bit low geared for my liking agree with you aswell on the Chim Vs Cerb front

Garage is Fernies..having used them for 8 years on and off suppose I feel a bit of ownership...

I have a crown wheel and pinion if you need it, you can but me a beer for it. I geared mine up to suit the motor change, but it was not at all noisy before hand. I got mine swapped for £350 quid all in.

Could be CV joints if it is lock related.
