There was an interesting debate (yes, really !!) in the HOP yesterday about
number plate deregulation. If it were to be made law you could basically
have any combination of numbers / letters or letters only which would put an end to those
silly plates that 'try' and spell a name. As it's likely to be a fund raiser for the
government I think it's got a chance of making the statute book.

What a cracking Idea.
I never thought I would say that about a Parliamentary debate.
Seems like we are getting more like the USA every day

The problem I see with this is that it will make it a lot easier to drive round on dodgy fictitious plates. Whereas now anyone with an unusual plate stands out, if the market is deregulated anything will go and won't draw too much attention. More unregistered, unlicenced etc.

"A form of voluntary taxation."

Not a bad way of raising revenues IMO.

Most cities have numerous ANPR cameras dotted throughout plus most traffic cars have onboard ANPR so any plate that is unregistered will be picked up quite quickly.

Admittedly a traffic car can act there and then but an ANPR camera is useless on a non-existent plate that shows up as registered to Mr Nobody. That's why the congestion charge zone has something like a 20% no-collection rate. The cars are clocked by the camera but then can't be traced. (Although I've often wondered why when a certain unregistered car passes a camera every day within about the same 10min period, why they can't set up a few traps and pull them over). I know you can just as easilly make up a duff plate and stick it on your car now i.e. 58AD UFF - there you go - but with a complete free for all there is a lot more scope for wrong doing.

I'm assuming you would not rob a bank with a fake number that really stood out eg SWAG,
RAIDER or VILLAIN !
