MR2 TRACK CAR ADVICE
Discussion
Hi i have a MK2 MR2 2.0 16v that is standard and wanted to know what to do to and how much to make into a track weapon?
Has anyone done this yet?
We are willing to strip out as much as neccesary, we are on a bit of a shoe string budget so be kind people.
Any advice welcome
Cheers

i wouldnt go for power (yet)....
i would:
bleed and change all the fluids.
Strip the interior. All of it, including unneccessary bits of dash etc.
short shift kit (very cheap).
Fit some used coilovers from MR2OC or IMOC - budget about £400. Its way to soft from the factory for track-only use. Quite a lot of them show up as they are too hard for the road, so people buy them, have their fillings rattled out, then sell them.
polybush the suspension. dont polybush the engine mounts.
new brake pads
are you going to cage it? probably a good idea. not cheap, but gives you safety.
track tyres. the grip with sticky track tyres on will pull your eyeballs out.
after a season, consider spending £2.5k on a turbo conversion.

Strip out as much weight as possible. Make sure the suspension is in good condition.
Make sure the Brake discs are ok, get some uprated pads. Change brake fluid for DOT 5.1
Dont save money on tyres, and good set of tyres makes a big difference.
Make sure the engine is running nice, change all the filters, and put in some good oil.

Have you considered the MR2 Championship? It's based around normally aspirated MR2s of all years and only allows limited modifications so costs are reasonable and all cars are competitive.

The advice given here so far has been spot on. The cheapest way to improve your MR2 is to add lightness - if you don't need it to get around a circuit then take it out! My own mk2 weighs ~1030kgs in full race trim (and is ballasted up to the minimum requirement for racing) a drop of nearly 200kgs from stock. A roll cage will not just improve saftey but will also add significantly to the chassis rigidty. A proper race seat and harness will mean that you feel everything that the car does and polybushes will enable you to react to what is happening rather than what has already happened.
Finally, do not scrimp on tyres. We use Toyo R888s in the MR2 Championship and they are very well suited to the car. Some track videos for you:

If you're visiting the London Motorsport Show at Brands Hatch on the 22nd and 23rd of November we'll be in the 750MC's garage. Look us up and I'll show you around one of our cars.
Cheers,
Patrick
