Was involved in an incident on Sat whereby approached a roundabout - one lane, in front are Landrover, Police Car then our TVR. Just before roundabout road widens into two lanes (T-junction)
so landy and police car are in the right lane - to turn right you would presume (no indicators on either Landy or Police car) room for TVR to take left lane as need to go left - drive past police car and landy - no cars approaching from the right so turns left at the same time Landy turns left? just missing going in to the side of TVR - we only live round the next corner so we went home - followed by the Police Car.

Were told it is illegal to undertake at roundabout
when we mentioned about the landy's mistake was told they need room to get round the corner? - knew we wouldnt win this one so just agreed with what ever he said. Police man let us off after checking all the documentation but I wonder if he would have bothered if we were in the Smart car.

I know the subject of not signalling has been done number of times on PH but you can usually pick up on road positioning of where people are heading

If it was just a case to stop and check us fair enough I welcome it, anything to cut down car crime but 'undertaking at a roundabout' Ive never heard of.

Nonsense, you're allowed to filter on the left hand side of slow moving or stationary traffic.

Thats what we thought but at the time its no use arguing with the Police - you could end up worst off - but its very very annoying and tempting to tell them to go back to driving school and learn about road positioning and the only allowed 'undertaking' is when the traffic in your lane is moving faster than other lanes - GRRRR

Same thing happened to me, coming out of london on the a1, along aerodrome road. Little old lady in the outside lane, not indicating, so I dipped past her in the middle lane, as I was going straight on at the approaching roundabout. Unfortunately I hadn't clocked Plod in the unmarked behind me, all I did was outbrake her and proceed as per highway code. Plod pulled me just up the road, eventually ended up with a driving with out due care and attention, points and fine. Allegedly I had undertaken the allegro, altho not exceeding the speed limit, and she had obviously neglected to push the little turning warning stick down. No fighting it I'm afraid, seems to be at the discretion of the plod in the car.

Slightly different:

I once blasted (what turned out to be) an unmarked police car that cut straight across my bows at a roundabout that had two clearly marked lanes around it. I was stopped and lectured for 15 minutes about overtaking at roundabouts! Didn't argue, sat meekly and mildly thoughout. Took the registration number and reported it to Constabulary HQ. Got an apology too.

Mind you, that was 15 years ago!
