Reuters Scotland Correspondent Ian Dermish said:
The Shetland Times reports an interesting open verdict given last week by Lerwick Coroner Dr Montgomerie, after the death of pensioner Mr Andrew Vetlar, 72 years, of Armistan Way, Lerwick, but the decision was regarded as controversial by close family and friends.
Mr Vetlar had been suffering from what was described as an 'undiagnosed condition' which had baffled local hospital medical staff and health officials in the Shetland town, for over six months.

Relatives believed that Mr Vetlar had died as a result of the effects of global warming, and pointed to the fact of his constantly high recorded temparatures before and after he entered hospital, and that he constantly complained of feeling hot.

Dr Sheila Kilken of the Northern Scotland Medical Board was dubious of the relatives claim but refused to comment.

However, an unamed spokesman for 'Greenwatch Scotland' a leading environmental group based in Glasgow, and which monitors global warming evidence and reports in Scotland, was also sceptical that global warming was a factor. "If so this would be a very unusual, if not a unique case, and there would need to be far more hard evidence than we have"

He continued "weather patterns in these latitudes, as well as the constant and powerful northerly winds disperse all but a fraction of global warming in Scotland's northern isles, but we still need to watch the situation closely"

Mrs Emily Vetlar, sister of the deceased, refused to comment other than saying "we have to accept the coroner's verdict"
Ho, hum...

Relatives of Mr Vetlar are stupid, to say the least.

Dr Sheila Kilken of the Northern Scotland Medical Board was in full agreement with the relatives claim but refused to comment.

However, an unamed spokesman for 'Greenwatch Scotland' a leading environmental group based in Glasgow, and which monitors global warming evidence and reports in Scotland, was also sceptical that global warming was a factor. My word I hope that's a fake.

If not, I really have seen it all now in terms of blaming GW (not that it exactly exists!).

Global Warming aside, this story is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.

P.S. It's called Shetland, not the Shetland Islands.

I doubt it is a true story.........there is no such thing as a Coroner in Scotland and no inquests. And "Northern Scottish Health Board"? Shetland has its own Health Board - "Shetland Health Board", funnily enough! And there is no "Armistan Way" in Lerwick biggrin

I lived there for 15 years - it is windy.
