Checking the fluids in the Tuscan yesterday. Before taking it for a run to get the temp up to check the oil, I looked at the water. It looked a little low, so I added what I thought the right amount.
Took the car out for a blat around, checked oil, topped up, put away.
I checked the water again a couple of hours later and noticed expansion had pushed the level up the vertical filler pipe to about 10mm from the top. However, at this point I noticed a hard calcified tidemark about 1mm thick in line with the level of the water. I tried to pick at it with my nail, but it wouldn't budge. I became increasingly concerned. What could be in the water that could solidify when hot? Furthermore, what damage could it do to the rest of the cooling system?
I decided to get a closer look at the scary tide mark and rather that drain the fluid off, I drew it out of the filler with a clean rag.
It wasn't until I had the level down to normal that I realised the calcified looking ring I was getting freaked out over was in fact the weld in the aluminium pipe!!
