Just had the first crumpets of winter - properly prepared by toasting and adding butter and Marmite (can it get any better?).

Your suggestions for crumpet toppings please biggrin

Just butter, 'shirley'. It's a tradition ( or an old charter, or something! wink )

Certainly, none of the suggestions so far sound better...

Agreed - enough butter to melt into and fill all the holes. If you must add something a small drizzle of golden syrup works quite well.

Grate some really strong (ideally vintage) cheddar, grind in plenty of black pepper and toss in a small quantity of dried chilli flakes. Give it a good mix.

Lightly toast the bare crumpets in a toaster, remove, then apply the grated cheese mix on top. Pop under a hot grill for a minute or two.

Melted cheese on crumpets with a real hot kick. yum

Jesus....

Sounds epic biggrin

Problem is we are then getting back to the issue of effort vs reward. 2 is not enough, I would need at least 4, that would probably take 15 mins. Not worth it I fear.

i reckon garlic butter would work, or blue cheese butter. not for breakfast though unless you want to stink the office out!

Does anyone have a recipe to make your own crumpets? I've always fancied trying to make them but kind of got the impression that they were just something you bought rather than made.

What's your preferred brand? Many can be too rubbery I've found.
The best by far, for me, are made by Warburtons.
