Hello all

The Estate has the wide load area I need for my Go Kart and general fannying about so i'm quite keen to get one when I get back in Febuary.

I'm after a diesel, hp not really an issue as it will just be a pootling about car. I want Air Con, alloys and roof rails but otherwise i'm not that fussed.

So, any trim levels to look for, a heated front screen would be nice.

Possible problems with certain power levels.

How good are they at towing?

Any good/ bad experiences, nuamces they have?

It will be a car i'll service myself and run into the ground so service costs are not really a worry.

Regards

Dave!

All have the heated front screen I think, the heated screen's been around on Fords since the mid 90's. Usual things to watch, rear subframe bushes need to be glued at a dealer, polybushes are available via ebay. Worth doing if you're towing.

Dual mass flywheel is 4 figures to repair if you throw a new starter and clutch in as well (again, dealer) apparently the single Transit flywheel will go on

Fuel pump is about £650 fitted

Other than that, just the odd niggle here and there with injectors. The TDDI's dont have the injector problems, the TDCi's do.

Seats are great, even in credit crunch spec. Zetec's and Ghia have cruise and some other nice to haves.

Facelift in 04 on the dash, depends if you want 3 dials or something a bit flasher really.

Very happy with mine, I sometimes think about changing it but I cant really work out what would be as cheap to run, insure, fix etc

That doesn't sound too bad. The injector issues are a worry as it is meant to be for cheap relatively hassle free motoring. The pumps going, is it sporadic or do they seem to go at certain mileages?

Have a check on some of the posts on MEG (fordmondeo.org) foe mileages and related failures. Seems to be high milers with chequered histories, or may have had problems earlier in their life.

I'm waiting for the day mine goes, as no doubt it will, it's just when and where

TDDI's (pre 03) dont have the injector problems as per TDCi's so if you're looking c.2002 you should be alright

They make good tow cars.

Mine has a braked towing limit of 1800kg, which is enough for most things.

The tallish 6th Gear is a minor problem towing, if you want to maintain 70mph on the steep hills 5th can be needed, but you find yourself pulling easily past the lorries and caravans if you do smile

Reversing, the rear visibility is not great, it is easy to reverse the trailer in my profile, but a small trailer was very difficult. I could not see it at all. (Tiny little 4ft thing). That said, I succeeded in reverse parking my trailer in London a few months back. It was not something I would recommend though. And the expected admiring crowd never appeared with the congratulations that I thought I deserved wink

According to the guy that repaired my injectors for me, he normally sees cars with failed injectors between 60 and 70,000 miles.

I've just paid £750 ish for 4 new injectors and coded to the car.
