I know you have just had remembrance Sunday.

There are a group of expats that are ex-forces that will be supporting our fallen at 'our' eleventh hour.

It is quite bizarre that I found, three days ago, while looking for something else, that I came across my old dog tags.

It is also good, for me, that I'm working with a couple of ex-services guys and we'll have our own remembrance.

My point? There is none. Just our remembrance of fallen fellas.

Yes we've had Rememberance Sunday, but I'm sure shopping centres, offices & roads will fall silent tomorrow!
We will remember them.

Maybe someone can help me with a little quandary I have. I have a Web Conference that has been set up for me to lead with a prospective customer tomorrow morning. Its starts at 11am. I usually have a quiet moment myself each year, but am not sure how I should handle tomorrow - I don't want to make the prospect feel uncomfortable. What are your thoughts?

My entire company will stop for 2 minutes tomorrow, if someone answers a phone during the silence they can expect their P45

I found this quite interesting today on the news when the interviewed the 110 year old survivor of ww1 that he said that there was not a single life that was lost could be justified and also that no one should ever forget the German losses either....

Less we forget

So how should radio stations deal with this?
2 mins silence is a lot on the radio.

Its a completely personal thing - if you can sincerely give 5 seconds. That's enough in my book.

I agree, I am ex RAF but that doesn’t mean I do not spend time thinking about others which have been lost. During my silence I feel for all soldiers and families, from all forces that have given the ultimate sacrifice for a cause they may or may not have believed in, but they believed in their country enough to fight.

I don't hold out much hope. Our receptionist (18 or 19?) walked round the office with the poppy box last week. When queried, she didn't know what they were in aid of. eek Though when given a prompt she agreed it was probably September 11th... despite it being November.

You've got to wonder what kind of history gets taught at school now...

Which time zone is that set in? I'm a Brit, working in the USA, so how do we do the 11th hour?

I know tomorrow (11th) is a holiday here too, memorial day.

You'll only make your prospect feel uncomfortable if you don't say anything to him or reply to his greeting and remain silent between 11:00 and 11:01am. Just propose to start the conference at 11:05am instead.

Not a holiday in Britain. Where in the US are you?

That quite interesting, and mirrors my Grandfather's views; he commanded an engineer unit that was on the last boat out of Dunkirk having stayed behind during the mass evacuation to slow down the German units. He then led one of the first engineer units back into Europe and saw service in other places.

At the end of the war (WW2) he threw away all of his medals, lobbed them in the sea, and vowed never to have anything to do with rememberance etc again. His view was that it was just a state way to justify, as he put it, wholesale slaughter. As such I tend to follow his views, I note when its 11 but don't really stop, just keep my mouth shut. I have no objection at all if others do or do not stop etc, each person should do what they think right without being judged in their actions.

I'm doing my 11th hour - how can I know exactly what the original was, did they observe BST 90 odd years ago? No idea.

I'll do my thing. I suggest you do yours. It'll be the right thing.

I'd just like to post a link to the following website

http://www.supportoursoldiers.co.uk/

It is slightly off topic, but I'm sure that most of you will agree that it is a worthy cause. Unfortunately this year they seem to be falling somewhat short of their fundraising target.

I can think of no better way to honour our fallen soldiers, than to support those who are putting their own lives on the line at this very moment.

Here is a link to the justgiving appeal, and I know how good PH'ers are at donating via justgiving; remember the Yorkshire Air Ambulance appeal.

The aim of Support Our Soldiers is to provide support for our serving men and women, and their families at home. This is done in every practical way possible including writing to deployed personnel, sending morale boosting welfare packages (throughout the year as well as at Christmas), helping those recovering from injuries, raising welfare issues and providing support and guidance to family members.

If you're new to the site, we're very pleased to welcome you on board! Those of you with a family member serving in the Armed Forces can be sure you're amongst friends as we already have lots of wives, girlfriends, mums, dads, grandparents, children and siblings checking in. All of them know just how hard it can be when your loved one's away from home and will share the ups and the downs whenever they're called upon to do so.

We have a very active Message Forum which is updated almost by the minute so do check this out and feel free to join in the discussions.

In 2008 we hope to do all we can to provide support and encouragement for all members of our Armed Forces and of course we encourage you to do the same!
