RX8 Question...
Discussion
Good day all,
Long time visitor to the site but first time poster
Well time has come to trade in the Fiat Coupe (before it ACTUALLY dies lol) and change up for somthing new. After looking around and thinking hard about what i wanted i have decided on an Rx8, 4 seats, decent boot, rwd (most excited about this!)and with a decent enough amount of power to keep me entertained on the commute...
I'm located in Northern Cyprus and went on a test drive of a 2006 6speed JDM import with 13000km's on the clock. Car felt really well balenced, sounded great and was diffrent enough to keep me interested for a while im sure and i was pleasently suprised by the amount of Tq the car had, i was expecting to have to rain the things neck just to get it going yet the power deliverly seemed very linear and was a pleasure to drive even in traffic, they may not have as much Tq as a 350z but i think that the power is there and that both the Rx8 and the 350z are very diffrent cars anyway.
I am awear of the fuel consumption (who buys a sports car for high mpg anyway!) and that the use alot of oil yet i dont really regard this as a negative point as the engines are designed to use the oil anyway. That an the fact that my dads past 20 years worth of Alfas seemed to burn a whole lot more the the Rx8 would!
Just got a couple of questions for you all:
- Anybody running an rx8 in a similar climate, and if so how do they respond?, would 5W30 oil not be better suited to the heat out here in comparison to the 5W20 that many seem to advise?
- Dont mean to sound stupid but the model i drove had no sat nav yet when the car was started the voice of a nice asian lady came bellowing out of the dashboard, stow-aways maybe? Any ideas?
- The 50-50 weight balence is more suited to the track then drifting but was wondering what modifications could i make to the car to make it a better drift car...I dont intend on dropping 4k odd on a supercharger/turbo setup by the way.
- What is the easiest way to remove the 180kmph nanny on the car? An annoying feature that all JDM imports have i beleive?
- Is there anyway to remove that annoying beep at 9000rpm? I know its there as an aid yet it just got on my nerves to tell the truth!
Thats about all for now, had a million questions but have spent the past few days really schooling up on the car, i coulden't find the answers for the above however so please do exscuse me if they seem a little basic
Thanks alot and i look forward to reading your reply(s)

Edited to add that i had test driven the 350z, s2000 and an evo 7 yet coulden't justify a two seater as my ownly car and the evo was extremly compitent yet it just didnt do it for me if you know what i mean, super fast and soild handeling but i just cant get excited about the styling...

The UK owners club is a good resource:

There are plenty of Americans running them in hot climates, might be worth looking on a US forum.
- Dont mean to sound stupid but the model i drove had no sat nav yet when the car was started the voice of a nice asian lady came bellowing out of the dashboard, stow-aways maybe? Any ideas?
Sure it didn't have a satnav? The unit hides away in the top of the dashboard:

Otherwise, no idea.
- The 50-50 weight balence is more suited to the track then drifting but was wondering what modifications could i make to the car to make it a better drift car...I dont intend on dropping 4k odd on a supercharger/turbo setup by the way.
You won't get any more power without forced induction. You might be able to make the car looser at the back by messing with the suspension, but you'll make it less competent on the road. To be honest, if you really want a car you can drift you'd be better looking at the 350Z.

Not that I know of; you could disconnect the buzzer, I suppose.
If you do choose a JDM car, check the spec carefully. The sports suspension, big wheels and limited slip differential which are standard on Euro cars are not standard on all JDM models.

As above, it may well have had the sat nav with the screen down. When I first drove mine home I couldn't turn it off, you have to go into the menu's. If it had sat nav there are additional controls by the heated seat switches.

Not sure but if you drive it hard it will drift OK.

For how often you need it I would keep it, they do rev like mad and are soo smooth you won't notice the redline without it.
If you want a sports 4 seater with a boot at a bargain price you won't find a better all rounder. Good luck.
